Discussion about
I am planning to renovate Kitchen during summer and starting to interview contractors. When you say 'interview' you mean walking through possible worksite and getting estimates or just talking over the phone about the project? How many do you usually interview before you line up everyone to decide who to go with. It is a lot of money and once it's done it will be difficult to go back so I am bit stressed out. What are the things that I should be looking into besides referrals.
They'll have to come see the site to put together a bid.
We had a list of six for a 2br/2ba gut. Four came to the site. Three submitted bids.
I'd narrow the list down based on communication (do they get back to quickly or leave you hanging?) and references first. When you feel comfortable working with somebody, ask to look at a project they've just completed and one they currently have in progress.
For the finished project, pay attention to details -- grout lines should be laser straight, caulk joints should be neat, gaps around doors perfectly consistent, etc.
For the work in process, pay attention to cleanliness -- are there piles of trash everywhere? How are the hallways being kept clean? Are new materials organized carefully or strewn everywhere?
The contractor we selected had the highest bid, but he was always on time, fast to respond, didn't make excuses, had a crew that produced high-quality work and kept the place clean.
thank you.
I never thought of having them all at once at the same time.

happy to answer any questions.
Good luck ungdoo
Ungdoo, I did a kitchen reno last year, and you definitely need them to come and see the space and walk through what you want done (in very specific terms). Based on the walk through, they submitted bids, then i checked references, etc. I did 4 of them, arranged them on the same day but at different times. Only 2 got back to me. One who is touted did the walk through and what's not, but I am still waiting for the bid...don't believe the hype. I was more than pleased with my guy. He did a couple of places for my friends so came highly recommended. Designed some custom things like vent covers and stuff for the window that he didn't charge me extra for. He wouldn't even let me tip him at the end. He also would check in and sent me updates with pictures on my phone (I was traveling for work for some of it). If you want more info, just let me know!
I wouldn't advise having different contractors come to the site at the same time. Let them come separately.

Funny... same thing happened to me.
Thank you everyone.
Will line up dates and contractor.. hope I get lucky.
i've been looking for a contractor also.
used a guy who was pretty good and fast but he charged me alot of money.
i spok to a friend yesterday and he told me you are supposed to negotiate on the price.
Is it common practice to bargain with a contractor on price?
