Discussion about
I am about to purchase a full kitchen appliance package (fridge/range/microwave/dishwasher), and wanted to know if any of you guys can offer any opinion on the 2 brands? At the advice of the appliance store, and what they claim to be close to the best in quality I can get with regards to high end appliances and best bang for my buck, I am getting a combination of: 36" sub-zero intergrated fridge wolf range wolf convection microwave miele hood miele dishwasher However, I have noticed, new developments are using Gaggenau... Perhaps for design reasons... not sure? Opinions? experiences? comments?

Gaggenau does not make a range, so you would be buying a separate cooktop and an oven. I don't know of anyone who thinks Gaggenau is better than Wolfe for gas -- more often you see them in induction models. To each their own, not my style.

Having done this twice in the last 4 years, very happy with Wolfe range. If you can swing it, get the "dual fuel" (electric oven) version, the oven in the all gas range is noisy. Also very happy with Sub-zero, but if I were getting the 36" fridge over freezer, I liked the interior and lighting in the Miele model better (though more $$). Don't have any Wolf microwaves, but we have come to love speed ovens. We have a Monogram at our house, Miele at our apartment. But these are at least twice the price of the microwave, but way more versatile and practical (and better looking). Love Miele dishwashers, but at least in the one we bought last year for apartment remodel there is no express cycle -- shortest wash time is 1.75 hours. The one we bought in 2010 for the house has a 45 minute short wash. No view on the Miele hoods, we did not buy off the rack.

nyc_sport,
Interesting that you would recommend electric over gas oven! Everyone I talk to and everything I read suggests gas is almost always better than electric. Cooking-wise, efficiency-wise, price-wise, etc etc... Surprisingly, you're the first to mention sound! hahaha... I don't cook (wifey does), but I never knew ovens were noisy! Regardless, we are in a co-op building where gas is included, so... electric just doesn't make sense for us, as it will also cause a drag in our electricity usage.

I am happy to hear you have been "very happy" with your sub-zero and Miele appliances.

Thank you for posting

Speed oven? is that like the newer generation microwaves that wolf is releasing?

My wife and I, sadly, use our microwave a lot of times to heat up our coffee, milk and beverages... hahaha

Wolf told us, steam microwaves can't do this... which was a no go for us.

But now that you mention how much you love it, I am starting to feel like we should seriously reconsider replacing our wolf convection microwave with a steam microwave. hmm......

Electric ovens/gas cooktops. Especially if you bake. Having said that I have both gas and electric ovens (the wall one is electric).

Superlun -- Not at all recommending electric cooktop -- I was suggesting that you typically see Gaggenau cooktops for electric applications, and I don't think anyone would recommend them over Wolf for gas, and I hate electric cooktops.

A speed oven is different than a steam oven -- we thought hard about the steam oven but ultimately concluded we would rarely use it. Apparently very good for reheating leftovers (You might consider visiting the D&D building -- there are Wolf/SZ, Miele, Monogram etc. showrooms that often have cooking demos). Some need water plumbed to it.

A speed oven is a combination microwave/regular/convection oven that can be used as a microwave or traditional oven, or in pre-programmed speed mode that bakes in about 30% less time by alternating between bake, convection, microwave and halogen (broil) heating elements. And, if you are putting the microwave under-counter, these are more practical because the door opens down rather than side to side. But be prepared for sticker shock on pricing (and you likely need 220v circuit).

Gaggenau is what I used for a lot of my appliances (steamer, deep fryer, in-wall coffee machine, etc) in my custom house build. I would definitely consider the brand higher end than Wolf/Sub-Zero. However, I would never go with an electric cooktop.

I have friends who have had a lot of complaints of repairs on their Subzero refrigerators. One replaced it with another high end brand finally. I had another friend who loves her Wolf range. The only problem is that when she uses the oven, it makes her kitchen super hot. For some reason, she couldn't install an adequate ventilation system in her kitchen.

Such an accomplishment to have two ovens, gas and electric!

It's not that uncommon, but thanks for the recognition.

jelj13, yea... I heard from multiple people that there was a 2-3 year period that sub-zero fridges were HORRIBLE, but they have since then resolved their issues "supposedly." I think they said some period around 2008-2012.

Top of the line G.E. monoline or KitchenAide Architect series can be good solutions for Refrigerators and Ovens, especially in an apartment where a vented oven range isn' t possible. If I were getting a new frig or oven most likely would be one of the two. For dishwashers I think Miele makes sense.

Riversider, shouldn't you capitalize the first use of the word Dishwasher too?
