Discussion about
Steve, How do you get out to Fire Island?
What part of Fire Island....
I go to Ocean Beach, Ocean Bay Park and Cornielle - You take the ferry from Bay shore..
There's also a train stop at Bayshore for the LIRR...
You need to know where you're going on Fire Island. The communities are very different. Cherry Grove / Pines / Sunken Forest are Sayville. Kismet is Babylon, I think, maybe Bayshore.
Tell me where you want to go.
There's another ferry from Patchogue, goes to Davis Park, I think.
Kismet must be from Bayshore as well.. There are no Babylon Ferry's...
As Steve said you gotta know what you want... Cherry Grove and the Pines are the gay beaches...
Ocean Beach is the biggest "Town" on Fire Island and is a lot of families during the day and partying kids by night - Some real good restaurants and some shopping... I'd recommend the Island Mermaid or Mathew's.
Kismet is small - 1 main bar / restaurant... You can actually walk to Kismet form Robert Moses beach furthest east - I believe field 6.. Walk past the Nude beach and the light house and I think it's about a mile... Ocean beach may be another mile longer. Then Ocean Bay park yet another mile -Ocean Bay park is further east and is even more partying kids at night - On Sunday's they have Reggae at 5:00 at Flynn's which I've gone to for many years, great way to end the weekend. All in between are smaller towns where you can rent a house in quieter areas for more family stuff...
Sunken Forrest is great for kids, they have a nature walk through the forrest and a nice beach...
I've gone to Cherry Grove for the Miss Fire Island contest which is a hoot and I've been there other times just to hang with the wife and some friends...
Never been to Davis Park but sounds like a family place with a decent bar called the Casino - I may go this season!!
Thank you. It was just a general question. I remember once doing some research & reading that you could drive to the ferries but the lots might be full once you get there so I just decided, "Next!" It's good to know that the LIRR is an option.
Just don't buy there. It costs 2x more to buy than to rent on Fire Island.
Yes - You can walk from the LIRR or take a cab... I'd imagine the same goes for Patchougue and the other Ferry stops since the LIRR hugs southern LI....
"Just don't buy there. It costs 2x more to buy than to rent on Fire Island."
LOLOLOLOLOL... This place is HILARIOUS....
I'm here for good....
I'd love to buy on FI... After the CRASH of course ; )
Anyone know how much does it cost to take the fairy from Bayshore to the Pines?
Congratulations on your new low, houser. Very impressive.
oh tenemental loosen up don't be so freaking retentive. Go look at a few more apts and pretend you're an interested buyer that'll do the trick for you.
Silly me, I should have known a little homophobia was all in good fun.
I love your stuff, man!
homophobia I just love when you and steve throw that word around all over the place. Yes, tenemental everyone on this board is a homophobe except for you and steve.
No, really man, I love your stuff!
And I don't think I've ever used that word here before. And I generally have a low tolerance for people who are excessively PC.
And I get it, you were kidding around. But it seems like one thing to joke around with a friend who knows you're kidding (and probably dishes something back) than posting fairy jokes anonymously on a public bulletin board, especially after yesterday's ugliness.
Hey, houser, if you're lucky the fairy will pay the fare on the ferry - then you can ask HIM.
Is it possible to just go out there for the day or is that just absurd? I've always heard so much mention of Fire Island but haven't really found too much info.
Definitely you can go out for the day . . . but the communities hate "Day Trippers" and make facilities unavailable.
So try going to Watch Hill, part of the National Park Service's Fire Island National Seashore, where they have all that stuff. The ferry leaves from Patchogue, and it's a short walk from the LIRR, or you can drive and park near the boat. Once there, a walk east is miles and miles of nothing but dunes, and a short walk west is Davis Park, to give you a sense of what the communities are like (although each one has a very different flavor).

It's basically one big sandbar: http://www.nps.gov/fiis/planyourvisit/upload/FIIS_Map2_5-2006.pdf
Thanx. I think they call it a barrier island - basically one big sandbar.
