Those articles never mention you need to maintain a car in Manhattan to get to most weekend places. That's another $1,000 a month (garage, insurance, lease, tolls, gas, maintenance.) Then you have to clean this weekend place (or hire someone to do it; more expenses), pay taxes, maintenance, utilities, insurance, landscaping, and of course it has to be furnished and you need to go grocery shopping as soon as you get there. These articles never get into the nitty gritty including spending hours in traffic during the Summer months.
