Discussion about
Rental building is replacing thermostats on existing PTAC units in all apartments. The PTAC units in my apartment have been replaced within the past few years (with refurbished units, not brand new) but they're working well, at least for PTACs, which are not known to be energy efficient. From the standpoint of if it ain't broke why mess with it, or why put new mechanicals on an old unit, I'm curious as to what effect the new thermostat will or should have. Does anyone have experience with this type of "upgrade"?
All the thermostat does is tell the unit when to turn its components on and off -- fan, heating mode, cooling mode. The PTAC doesn't care and will still do the same thing when it's turned on.
The questions to ask are about the thermostat itself -- in this situation mainly who controls it, but also is it programmable (e.g. a schedule for different settings while you're sleeping or at work), where will it be located, things like that.
