Discussion about
Looking to rent or buy in best zoned schools areas on the UWS for Elementary school. I am aware of PS 199, but it has a permanent overcrowding issues. The other two schools that seem very good are PS 9 and PS 87, maybe PS 166. Are there any other worth considering? Are PS 199/87/9/166 likely to get rezoned the next few years? How do they compare to Private Schools in the area besides the obvious (lower student/teach ratio, better facilities, more privileged study body)?

("Only the best for me!")

All UWS schools are places where your child will thrive. Choose an apartment you like in an area you like, and send your child to whatever school has room and will take it.

All schools are likely to get rezoned always, btw.

PS 87 was recently rezoned to mitigate a waitlist that was often over 100 students deep. Out of this rezoning came PS 452, which I have heard very good things about. The boundaries of this school zone are roughly 71st to 78th Street west of Amsterdam, but check the map to confirm. I think it would be a good idea to add homes in that zone to your search.

As far as I know, and I am a plugged in parent zoned for PS 87, the only school that is on the rezoning radar right now is PS 199, but if overcrowding and unacceptably long waitlists continue to worsen, you will likely see more rezonings and/or new schools created.

It is really impossible to compare the public elementary schools to the private ones, but schools like the ones you are looking at often have significant parent financial support from fundraisers - in some cases providing nearly $1000/student - to supplement the Department of Education’s often limited budget and make the schools more competitive.

Thanks DanDigs. How about PS 166? How does that compare to PS 87 and PS9?

How old is your child? You can tour the schools' OH next winter (finished for this year) and have a better sense what's the best fit. In terms of test score, PS 166 cannot compare with PS 9 or PS 87. PS 9 PTA raises the most money every year. We'll be listing our 3 bed/2 ba in PS 9 zone in 2 weeks.

ganda, I would check out insideschools.org to read up on the schools. Also, definitely go on tours and try to talk to parents of kids who go to that school.

Ask if Ms. Dial's classroom is open to your child.
