Increased inventory in spring?

I have been on the hunt for an alcove studio/one bed in Chelsea/West Village/Flatiron area for several months now, and I need to be out of my current apartment May 1. At this point I'm going to have to request to stay a couple months longer, but is it generally true that more apartments come onto the market in the spring? I am getting desperate/scared that there is simply zero inventory in the area I want to live. Help!
