Discussion about
I am currently in the market of purchasing another apartment in NYC. My mortgage for the current apartment has been completed. Hence in addition, to buying another apartment, I would like to have my parents move in. I read through the rules of the coop board handbook/house rules and nothing in the rulebook states anything of that nature. Questions: 1. Is this typically allowed? I will pay the monthly maintenance. 2. Do i need to notify the board? 3. How often does this happen? 4. Are there any legal implications if the house rules does not explicitly state any of my actions? Thank you Streeteasy!

1. yes bc they are considered immediate family
2. no
3. all the time
4. no

no coop board would cause issues if you have your immediate family move into your unit!

Do not notify the board! It's not necessary in this case.

Are you moving your parents into your current apt or are you buying a new apt for yourself or are you buying a new apt for parents and yourself? If buying for them then can be tricky since some boards don't like that for some strange reason even if you qualify financially. If you are letting your parents live in your current apt that may be ok depending on your co-ops governing docs. But as Tonyhoward has mention, no point of notifying your board or mgmt since they will become a big pain in the ass. Just have to grease the building staff and make sure they don't make trouble.

I am moving my parents to my current apartment and will be buying another apartment (primary residence) for myself.

Thank you for all the advice!
