I am in the process of organizing for a kitchen renovation. The project involves the demolition of a wall that has electrical risers running to the apartments above, as well as the relocation of water and gas lines. The plans were approved and signed off by my co-op management office on August 30th. How long should it take for the expeditor to pull the permit thereafter? The expeditor has now had the signed paperwork for over a month. Last week our contractor contacted her and was told it would be another three and a half weeks before the permit is issued. Is this usual? All in all, we have been working on obtaining the permit since the beginning of July. It has been a long, slow and frustrating process even with the "help" of a expeditor (a misnomer, if ever there was one). Can anyone pitch in with advice? What kind of Qs should I be asking at this stage? Thanks! [less]
Watching this because we are going to go through the same process (for a gut reno).
Have your plans been submitted to the DOB? Who hired the expeditor? Can you check with your architect?
We are using a design and build company. Our contractor hired the expeditor. We are not so happy with the choice as she seems to take four or more weeks to deal with every stage of the process.
What's your DOB job filing's status? You can find all applications at your building at http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/bispi00.jsp
Kas61,
I would ask if they could have done a same day filing. At most it should take about a month, not 2
I tried searching on the above website but found nothing relating to our reno/permit. I guess that means nothing has been filed yet. The expeditor has had the building-approved plans and signed paperwork for five weeks now. Our contractor said the architect has to meet with the planning office to review the plans and that no one can control this process and it all depends on how busy they are. Last week our contractor said it would be another three weeks. After that the electrician and plumber both have to file for their permits so we are looking at at least another week on top of the three weeks. Should it really all take this long? Should I call the expeditor directly?
This sounds very unusual to me. I've heard of expediters timing when they send in the application, so that they can get the preferred plan examiner. But that's just picking which weekday to go. Why don't you call him/her directly to find out? I wonder whether the contractor has some reason to delay the start of the work...
KAS, The same day is indeed possible. Our expeditor got it the same day but we have no movement of gas. New plumbing, walls and window was included.
Yes, we are beginning to suspect that the contractor is dragging her heals for some other reason. Very disappointing and frustrating...
