Discussion about
Hi everyone, I'm considering renting an apartment with central air. The broker told me that I, the tenant, would have to pay for my own heat and hot water, which in this apartment is fueled by electricity. 1) Just wondering. What would be the difference in my overall electricity bills for this type of apartment ... as opposed to any apartment where the heat & hot water are NOT electric? The apartment is 1700 sf and is a loft, but on the short side in term of ceiling height. LOL. The central air both cools and heats the apartment. Has anyone had experience with this? 2) Would I be able to call Con Ed and ask what was the average monthly utility costs for the previous tenant? Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

I believe you can call ConEd and ask what the amount would be for a "Level Billing Plan" where they charge you the same amount every month and then eventually make adjustments based on actual usage, but you might have to find and tell them you just signed a lease on the place.

Ever run a space heater in the winter? Is not cheap and if your space is big, it will likely cost a lot more than gas. You can probably research the name of the unit online to see how efficient it is as well.

There are many factors such as window insulation, amount of sun, is the heating low during the day when no one is there, is there a reversible ac / heat pump mechanism which is much cheaper to run, and whether you are happy with 70 degrees or like 75 degrees. People in Manhattan are used to 75. You are looking at $300-750 extra per month during the 4 winter months.

Hi, Thanks for your help, everyone. I did call Con Edison. I was able to get the average monthly Con Edi bill for the apartment, which is $300 to $350. I'm not sure how they arrived at the figure: based on the previous tenant's usage or based on similar units in the building, or whatever, and I probably should have asked. (For anyone else with a similar question, the Con Ed # to call is (877) -779 -6943)
Thanks again

If it's electric heat, probably $300~$500/month in the coldest months
