DIY Reno in Coop

Anyone know the typical rules for DIY in a coop building? Not looking to do anything to do anything plumbing or electrical related. Going to gut out the kitchen cabinets and sink, change doors and closets in the apt and paint. Any thoughts on whether it's wise to tip super ahead of time to make sure process goes smoothly? How much is fair?

I gave my super $200 when I got the place just to smooth anything over. You need to look at the house rules for the building to see how they regulate DIY. Anything that makes noise should have instructions/prohibitions detailed.

If you are gutting the sink, your building may consider that to be 'plumbing'. As noted above, read your house rules and have a talk with your super. You shouldn't have to bribe him.

talk to your managing agent. It is likely that you will still need to submit an alteration application to the board for review. For this sort of job it should be pretty quick and easy to get approval. And yes, a tip to the super is always a good idea.

Yeah I didn't consider it a bribe. I got the place in May and considered it his tip for that year.

Bramstar is correct on both counts. In my prewar coop, not notifying the managing agent of ANYTHING you are going to do, including painting and/or new carpets could result in stiff fines (up to $1,000 per day), and "bribing" the super could result in his dismissal. Up and up and honest is always the best way to go. Perhaps condos are a different matter; I'm not sure.
