Discussion about
Hello, I'm wondering if you can post the address of any residential buildings in Manhattan that you know for a fact to be soundproofed, i.e. because of good construction, you can't hear your neighbors above and below. Thanks so much!

great question. the vast majority of apartment buildings in manhattan are of poor quality, and constant noise is a major problem.

Constant noise is more of a problem on this discussion board, if you know what I mean.

most nice buildings in nyc have double or triple-paned windows and in those apts, most noise if kept out. I have lived in exceptions, ie right near midtown tunnel but if you are on the 5th floor or higher with double or triple-paned windows you will hear the outside noise but it should not consistently be consistently loud enough to be an issue. Best bets--choose apts that are in between avenues, facing south if the building is on the southern side of a street or facing north if the building is on the nort side of the street or go higher up in buildings...it gets especially quiet at 20th floor and up in buildings with irregular exteriors

I live in union square and it is extremely quiet in my apt so I think noise varies quiet a bit even within a building.

I thought we were talking about interior noise... neighbors and such.

Outside noise IMHO is easy... its folks above who can kill you.

I've been lucky to have had two places in a row top floor (although they can get hot depending on the roof). I've also noticed that loft-like apartments can be the worst. Because in opening up the beams, they often get rid of what used to be a layer of insulation. They look great, but you can often hear everything.

I'm curious to know if there are better built buildings in terms of soundproofing.

Certain prewars, notably The Ansonia, have a reputation for soundproofing (and opera singers).

interesting...my apologies but in terms of interior noise I haven't had a major problem with that since I lived in a crappy walkup in hells kitchen 6 years ago, prior to when I started working full time. since then, in allegedly luxury buildings and one doorman non-luxury building I haven't had a problem...maybe i just was surrounded by quiet neighbors...
