Discussion about
I live in a luxury rental building in manhattan that is part of the 80/20 program. I've never had a problem with this. But late last night, my favorite doorman was beaten to a pulp by one of the residents who is being subsidized by the government. The doorman refused to let in one of his friends into the building because he was harrassing a female who lives here. The guy then started threatening the doorman, and before he could do anything, he started pummeling him. My doorman is in his 50's and couldn't defend himself. Thankfully, the cops arrived and arrested them. I'm now thinking of moving out, after this disturbing incident. I'm so furious at the city for letting these types of people live in nice luxury buildings, at taxpayers expense. This program has gotten out of control.

rufus is that you?

Stupid is stupid... even if you are rich or poor. IF a rich guy beat up your doorman would you leave? Gotta go... but random acts of violence is part of NYC. Sorry to hear.

There is only one person on here who would use the words 'luxury rental building' and '80/20 program' in the same sentence...and that's Rufus.

Why can't a guy in his 50s defend himself? Am I missing something? Is that considered "old"?

50s is "old", alleys and dockers are "upscale", and people actually want to live in Chicago.

Welcome to rufus' fantasy world.

McHale... very impressive... but I prefer the squat as a measure of strength as it is the "foundation" for all physical activity... my on-line persona can squat 585lbs... but can bench only 285... :) And really when a mugger comes at you... screaming I can bench 345 usually does no good.... you need to do some MMA stuff on her butt :)

I?m in Cancun for a couple of weeks, and just terrified about all the violence in 80/20 program luxury rental midrise buildings in upper west side and greenwich village.

But as strong as McHale and w67thstreet are, I bet they can lift the massively supermorbidlyobese Chicagoans who come to Cancun and from the Gold Coast and shamelessly flaunt their abundant pasty cellulite-engorged flesh. There are whole packs of them roving the streets and beaches here.

McHale and w67thstreet, maybe you should have taught some of your mugger evading skills to nyc10022 - he seems to be dead according to the discussion on Chicago violence. Oh well, I'm sad that a fellow human being is dead from non-natural causes and Streeteasy will have 25% total fewer posts on the discussion board as a result.

I live in an 80/20 rental building and have had no problem with the subsidized people. They mainly live on the lower floors and act properly even though they are poor.

If quantum's story is true, which I highly doubt, it's an anomaly and definitely not a common occurrence.

W67Tth street I actually benched 405 on the decline bench last year before I ripped my supraspinatus in my shoulder on a straight flat bench doing only 345 :)......flat really stresses shoulder whereas decline is more forearms.
Usually I max out Smith Machine with 45lb plates(16) doing half squats....what's that like 720lbs plus bar? :) The only time I got mugged was when I was like 16 years old, fell behind in my pack and they tried to steal my bike in Central Park.......now my driver photo ID looks like I just got realeased from OZ or Rikers........maybe I did.......

If you wanna live long and have good quality of life while you're doing it, it's not strength that you need. It's 2 things: good cardovascular health, and flexibility.

If you keep you heart in good shape, that's half that battle. And flexibility will help keep your joints lubricated and your body aligned. (ie it will help you fight off arthritis)

Lift weights if you want, but when you're done, follow us girls into yoga class. You'll be happier. ;-)

If you don't lift weights, you can be as flexible as you want, but your bones will go to shit.

Girls, yoga all you want, but you need to follow us guys to the weights so you don't get osteoperosis.

Plus, muscle burns fat...

Actually weight lifting is the best overall way to a healthy heart and quality of life. Not only do you strengthen your heart muscles and condition your heart to process more volume of blood, you can handle any sudden stress whether emotional or physical, you also strengthen your muscles/tendons and weight training is a surefire way to strengthen your bones to prevent osteoporosis as you age. Also as you age you lose muscle mass and a total body workout keeps those muscles from atrophying. There was a great article in Men's Health last year on the unique advantages that moderate/heavy weight lifting has on health was was written by a world famous surgeon. You actually enlarge the heart, called an Athletes Heart that helps pump more blood, especially the left chamber. During my last stress test the only concern my doctor had was the borderline size of my left ventricle which was within the outer limits of size, but he dismissed it because my overall vitals were perfect. According to this article this is normal for a heavy lifter like myself and actually very normal and healthy. I have it Xeroxed on my desk somewhere to show my cardiologist on my next visit.I'll try to dig up the article.

Ugh, I guess I I just entered a sports club locker... Smells like too much testosterone.... I have to confess that all I need is a man with what McHale calls Athlete's heart! It pumps up more blood! Would he also have athlete's feet?
