Discussion about
Other than Manhattan, what are some good neighborhoods for people who don't like cars, i.e. walkable shopping districts, access to mass transportation, etc.
Tokyo
Your mom is pretty walk-all-overable, too, but neither she nor Tokyo are within commuting distance of midtown.
just answered your dumb question. Other than manhattan, do you mean outer boroughs, North America? Why would anyone ask a non-Manhattan question on this board?
Brooklyn Heights, Forest Hills, Williamsburg, Hoboken. I'm assuming that's the kind of info you're looking for. Certain parts of Park Slope.
I think you missed the two best answers - Cobble Hill, Caroll Gardens follow the F train, and have probably the best shopping/eating district in Brooklyn. Much of cobble hill also gets you close to borough hall with all its trains.
Fort Green if you are anywhere near Flatbush and Atlantic. Lots of cuts blocks just a few blocks away, and the restaurants have been popping up.
Prospect heights closer to Grand Army. Another hot spot popping up, and transportation is great.
Another interesting one... brighton beach. Its the end of the train, but tons right there to walk to, including the beach.
Also, we left out most of Queens.
Jackson Heights is easy to get to on the 7, and TONS of food and retail right there. Hell, much of the 7 train applies there... all those neighborhoods like sunnyside and such.
I was just getting things started in the right direction, 10022. My knowledge of Queens is horrible. Add Boerum Hill. I agree with you about Prospect Heights near GAP, some beautiful buildings and great opportunity with good transportation.
Brighton Beach seems a bit far to me. What's the Ft. Greene transportation options again?
> What's the Ft. Greene transportation options again?
Everything at Atlantic/Flatbush (I noted if you live close). The smoke joint and havana cafe are just 3 blocks from there...
> Add Boerum Hill
With you on transportation, and some of it for walking... Depends where you are. Atlantic Ave has definitely made a run, but others spots are most just long blocks of houses. I like CH and CG a little better because you're always within spitting difference of court and smith street...
You could also say "downtown brooklyn". Certainly for transportation, and definitely walkable, just not very pretty. But you can get to Brooklyn Heights or Cobble Hill or Boreum Hill pretty easily... so your immediate walk 'aint so nice, but you get access to a lot of stuff.
nyc10022 is dead on for Brooklyn neighborhoods. Fort Greene is great for transportation really anywhere west of Carlton and below the park (individual preference notwithstanding) as you're close to a lot of lines. Downtown is great for the same reason, though not as neighborhoody. Williamsburg around the Bedford and Lorimer stops is great as well. Queens is much more hit and miss - Astoria and Sunnyside probably meet the criteria the best, though I'm sure there are others.
another vote for Forest Hills. you've got clothing stores, a Barnes & Noble, a butcher .. . great places to walk the dog . . even a homemade ice cream place. Good schools too.

Astoria, Queens (Broadway)!
bklyn, qns, bronx, they're all walking neighborhoods. most people in the boroughs don't have cars.
> most people in the boroughs don't have cars.
Yeah, thats not quite true... most of queens does. Much of brooklyn does. You're probably just thinking of the segments you know... but there is a lot more out there.
