Discussion about
Just go take a look at midtown east or midtown west or kips bay or other areas and there are plenty of affordable apartments.

MFLS30GBG - right on. I think most of the "bitching" crowd are from far far away (not overseas though). You know, the people who consider Wall Street area to be better the Upper West Side above 96.
On the good side, if they were smarter, the Upper West Side above 96 will be over $1200/psf. I'm bidding on something on West 106. Would not want them to suddenly smarten up.

This topic is full of truth.

People have no right to complain about rental prices while saying "I'll only live below 14th st".

well, i'll only live below 14th, north of houston, west of broadway, and east of hudson. obviously, if you want to live in a particular area you are going to have to be willing to pay more.

but the truth is, this entire thread is such an example of privilege. i mean, kips bay is affordable? midtown east is affordable? tell that to the people living in bed-stuy, or brownsville, or east new york, or anywhere on staten island, or jackson heights, or canarsie. or people who can't afford to live in the city at all, who are stuck in newark and yonkers. or, for that matter, the 80% of people in the world who's standards of living are below those of even most poor americans. i love the merely rich complaining about the entitlement of the even richer. get off your high horse.

no one who lives in an nonstabilized, decent apartment in manhattan below 96th (or 125th on the west side) has any legitimate right to complain about what they can afford to life. you are in the top 1% of living standards in the world, in the premier city in the world, in the most coveted borough in that city, in the best area of that borough. the affordable apartments are not in kips bay, they are in brownsville.

That's what I love about this board, it is a great outlet for the rich and spoiled. Where else can you bitch about a $2M apartment? Try having that conversation with someone that doesn't live here and they will think you are fucking nuts.

JuiceMan, try telling the relatives in Bozeman you live in a 1200 sf apartment and are waiting until you can afford a dining alcove. They'll think you're fucking nuts.

aboutready, you are right. I tried to explain over the holidays (outside of NY) that I thought $250 was a phenomenal deal for garage parking. Someone who overheard the conversation piped in "that doesn't sound too bad, what is that about $20 a month?”

Shrug, I find it easier to bitch about affordability than to move to Brooklyn :)

I actually don't think midtown east or kips bay are affordable either. I think people who complain about rent should move to Harlem.

I own here for 1/10 of what it would cost downtown and I have friends who live in a 3 bedroom apt for $1200 a month.

There are plenty of whites around the 145th area for people who are afraid that they'll be "alone".
