Discussion about
We're considering a move to either Brooklyn or Harlem. Anyone know much about public middle schools in those areas? Thanks -
My understanding is that there are no "zoned" middle schools in most of Manhattan. You HAVE to apply out at 5th grade (or before). So it doesn't matter where you live.
Or at least nobody you'll ever meet will go to the zoned school if there are still zoned ones. I've been told that almost all 5th graders get their first or second choice school. But it's still a nerve-wracking process for the whole family.
Cobble Hill has some of the best in the city.... definitely better than Harlem.
I spoke with the Bd of Ed so I know District 3 and much of Brooklyn are not zoned, so-called "choice districts." Meaning you apply and take your chances. I do believe you have a better chance getting in a school in a particular district if you live in that district or graduated from elementary school in that district. nyc 10022 - do you know the name(s) of the great Cobble Hill middle schools? Anyone know anything about Fort Greene/Wmsburg choices?
beebee, not sure about middle schools in Williamsburg, though I would try to talk to some parents of students at PS 17 (arguably the best school there) and see where their kids are going on to.
