Discussion about
What do people think about this street, particularly as it heads east towards the park? I'm just beginning to consider purchasing a 2 bedroom and there seems to be some interesting apts available in this neighborhood. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
The park block is fine, though I wouldn't want to be on a low floor. I like 50 W.96th. Don't know too much about the other nice buildings on the block.
That's a very heavily traveled street (96 is a major east-west corridor)...I've been researching the market for +/- 6 months now, seen several listings on W. 96th and eventually have concluded that the heavy traffic (both commercial and noncommercial) on the road is not for me. Also, West Side Highway has an exit/entrance ramp at 96th...more traffic. I was told by one fellow open house visitor that the rule was "north of 90th Street, stay west of Broadway". But - some good deals around that area, especially if you are open to gut renovations.
In addition to the traffic Beer mentions, the southbound exit to the West Side Hwy leads through 95th, and the westbound exit cutting through Central Park exits on 97th, so both those streets have a good amount of traffic as well. Then there's Columbus Village which will add hundreds of luxury rentals one block away, along with Whole Foods, Borders, Modells, TJ Maxx, etc.
The Columbia is on that block isn't it? the building I mean..full service, I do not like the interiors as much, but they have some amenities.
Living near Central or Riverside parks is not bad in the 90s--it's the middle blocks that feel a little bleak. The eastern front holds the potential of Columbus Village, while the western front has an express subway station for quick commutes.
if I could get an apartment as a fair price I would live anywhere in manhattan below 96th street.
Thank you all so much, your feedback has been a great help:)

PMG is right - columbus and amsterdam in the 90s are so-so at best.
Columbia, on the other hand is a great building.
