translation: the apartment is "primed" by another broker, and I want to represent you as the renter/buyer, even if this means you will have less room for negotiation as a result of my "help".

upper west: Agree 1000%. They add little value and offend greatly. Compare this to other professions - lawyer, dentist, accountant - who add lots of value and offend rarely. In short, for what you pay (Thousands!!!!!! just for a rental), brokers are the worst.

The internet, coupled with the current economic climate, is rapidly rendering their profession obsolete.

If the broker isn't giving you the exact address it's probably not his/her exclusive & it's either a "limited" listing meaning only a few brokers have access/ a relationship w/ the owner or it's an "open" listing meaning anyone who knows about the apt can show it & rent it. Broker doesn't want to give you the exact address b/c they don't want you to try & rent it on your own or they think you might be a broker who doesn't know what building it is & is fishing for info. BTW- I'm a broker.

I agree that there are lots of hack brokers out there - even a lot in the major agencies. But, enough with the "they ALL suck" routine. I've worked with a couple part-timers who were no good and were doing it as a hobby (which includes far too many NY Brokers), but I have also worked with two who were excellent. I think two of the main problems in the industry is it is too easy to become a broker (I am a lawyer and can become one just by signing up, which makes no sense whatsoever) and there seems to be little to no oversight/no enforeced guidelines on how they should operate. Good luck with your search.
