The Bloomberg administration has released new details about its planned rezoning of the area surrounding the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, currently noted for the unappealing industrial sites that dominate the neighborhood. Per an environmental review document (PDF) that went up on the Department of City Planning’s Web site yesterday, the city projects that a rezoning will bring about 3,200 new apartments over the next decade to the area, rising in place of warehouses, industrial and commercial sites, and parking lots.
Assuming that at some point someone in this city will have the ability to build apartments again, the mixed-use neighborhood the city envisions for the northern stretches of the Gowanus Canal would better knit the western reaches of Park Slope with Carroll Gardens. For now, anyone walking from the one stroller-laden Brooklyn neighborhood to the other must pass through a less-than-pleasant stretch as they cross over the Gowanus Canal, which once was used to transport inland the brownstones that make up much of northwest Brooklyn’s housing stock.

3rd ave through 5th ave is a dump. Who in the world would want to live next to a toxic canal and streets full of gas stations and tire shops.

Revitalizing that area would be great, but it will take a long, long time. The canal is filthy, and the Smith and 9th station needs a fair amount of work. It would go a long way towards bridging Park Slope with Boerum Hill and Carroll Gardens though, which would be great for Brownstone Brooklyn. For the time being, there's actually a lot going on in Gowanus in terms of art and music, not unlike what happened in Williamsburg in the 90s. Several music venues have opened up down there. This article is worthwhile for anyone interested: http://nymag.com/arts/all/indie/52575/

67th -- I grew up a few blocks from his fictitious residence and a few blocks from his actual residence, so I guess it rubs off. Don't know AD Clay's whereabouts.

This area was once the home of Standard Oil. At the time it was the largest petrolem producer and refiner. This was back in the day, before income tax and enviornmental awearness or laws that govern it. What lies beneath will most certinly kill you...albiet...slowly. If you've given up smoking and fried food but still harbor the idea of a shot life...this RE is for you. Think of all the money you save on lighting...the ground water glows!!!

It's just like "prime" Chicago, and lots of people live there. Look at all the gas stations in Chitroit's Gold Coast, for example: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=gas+station+near+gold+coast,+chicago+il&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=32.66491,56.25&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=14
