Is it worthwhile to own manhattan?

I'm a young professional in manhattan considering a purchase of a one bedroom for 300-500k. Would you consider this a worthwhile investment? The obvious factors are im paying a mortgage for something I can own instead of paying for a rental that goes nowhere. But to me the maintenance fees are ridiculous. Its half+ the rent of a decent one bedroom rental. Anyone have comments pros/cons or any reccos for places to look with low maintenance fees and a decent value that could see appreciation? All comments appreciated.
