We recently rented this unit and wanted to warn other tenants that the broker and landlord of this unit will not return your security deposit. We recently rented this unit and wanted to warn other tenants that the broker and landlord of this unit will not return your security deposit. After a thorough walk through and confirmation of damage amount (less than $500), and knowing we were moving across the country after we left, the owner informed us he was withholding almost $5000 of our security deposit. It took more than 45 days to get even some of our security deposit back, and for the rest we now have to file a claim in small claims court. The landlord is relying on the broker, who is claiming a $1500 "service fee" for getting the apartment back to its "original" state (even though the legal standard is "normal wear and tear").
