Discussion about
Hi - we are looking for a NY area near a park that has off leash hours. For a sane daily commute to Times Square for work are we limited to Central Park, (certain sections of) Riverside Park and Prospect Park? Any advice would be welcome.

The only park I know of that has an off-leash dog run is the one in Union Square.

Tompkins Square Park in the East Village (around 10th St between Ave A and B) has two excellent dog runs. One for small dogs and a larger one for big dogs. You've got the R,W at 8th and Broadway and The N at Union Square if you go further north. Should only be around a 30 minute commute depending on your walk.

I'm sorry, I should have been more succinct - I wasn't talking about dog runs. I meant parks where dogs can run free before 9AM and after 9PM. Unfortunately my dog gets aggressive in smaller confined spaces with a lot of other dogs.

Can't you get a ticket for having your dog odd the leash? I've never heard of such a rule. Have you checked with the parks department?

I think your best bet is CP.

But here is the official list of runs and off-leash.

alpine, dog-runs-whthin-parks exist throughout the city.

The Union Square one is actually the WORST in my experience,
as most of those young "Newly New Yorkers" don't follow any of the rules--
they don't even pick up after their own dogs,
and I recently saw this one guy who left the gates open as he exited, and
some dogs escaped!

With this said, 3rdMan, we have a strict leash law 24-7, and
such a setting won't exist.

There's a huge group that meets every morning at Riverside Park and 99th street. It's a great group of dogs and people. Also, a similar group meets near the tennis courts in Central Park and 93rd near the tennis courts.

my wife just asked me why i am sighing so much. who frigging cares about a good neighborhood for dogs. its not that i don't like dogs--i love dogs. as a manhattan resident, i am not in a position to have a dog but really .... who frigging cares? someone needs a neighborhood that works for dogs? donate your excess money to something...anything. but a neighborhood for dogs?

CC - this is akin to the grocery store question, and the public school question. If you have a dog (or like to cook, or have a school-aged child), these issues matter every single day. Yes, someone needs a neighborhood that works for dogs. Some people have some helpful information. Everyone wins.
Except, apparently, your wife.

cc, life does go on, you know? have a glass of wine or three.

parts of Central Park are off leash, and wonderful for the pooch.

give me a break. wanting to have a place where your dog can run off the leash is akin to needing a good public school? no, its not. no, no, no. aren't you a broker? why don't you identify yourself as such? we are way past business as usual and worrying about dogs running without a leash is not on the same level as wanting education for your child.

I didn't identify myself as a broker because I was just making a snarky comment, not one associated with my work in any way. I should have, you're right.

For many people, their dogs are as important as children. That may seem strange to you, but it's true. There are indeed places in the city where dogs can run off leash. I think this thread is helpful.

Riverside Park above 79th Street allows dogs off-leash between 9 and 9. There are many dog owners in the morning in the area around 80/81st with their dogs off leash so that it actually become like a dog run. In addition, there are fenced-in dog runs inside Riverside Park at 72nd Street, 87th Street and 105th Street. And the boardwalk down by the water is terrific for leashed dog walks.

1. nice to be off the leash.
2. ironic, in the extreme for me, we made our first foray into outside of ny real estate because my job was to walk the big guy on the weekends (my wife, the early riser, did the weekdays) and i, clever guy, suggested that we look for weekend place where the pooch could run off the leash.
3. lost everything we ever put into stock market -- - made it back and then some --- in real estate ( I know, I know).
4. guess I owe it all to the first dog who wanted to run off the leash.

FWIW the Wash Sq Park renovation is to include a rather large big-dog dog run, but I realize that isn't the same. Still, it won't be the nasty, smelly, dusty mess that most dog runs are.

There is also, of course, the very well-heeled small dog run in the park that will be renovated shortly as well.

Stuyvesant Park also has an off the leash run. Prospect Park is the best.

Dog run on 81st & Columbus behind Nat Hist Museum is great, and the Great Lawn early mornings allows dogs off leash. With proximity to Times Square, you could do worse than the UWS.

Just to clear up some confusion for some people. Yes there are off leash hours for certain parks - as mentioned; central park, prospect park and certain parts of riverside park. As stated in my second post - my dog gets aggressive around a lot of dogs in a dog run so thats a no go.

For the person who finds a "neighborhood for dogs" ridiculous - well, if you move here with one it becomes a big deal. What do you suggest I do, give him up? Weird post man.

We absolutely took dog friendliness into account when looking at apartments. For off-leash, CP is fine before 9 am (and there are not that many dogs so you can easily find a "quiet" place for your aggressive one) prospect park is fantastic on the weekends for the off-leash before 9 am but its packed with dogs ... good for most people but not for this poster. I would go with UWS close to either Riverside or CP. Good luck!

One answer, THE UPPER EAST SIDE. If you want to really let you dog run you need to be near Central Park. Dogs are allowed off leash before and after hours, and you can make friends with other dog owners who meet around 7am and let the dogs romp in a big group. There are similar groups later in the evening as well. There are also plenty of people who just walk their dogs off-leash with out a group, so you can do whatever you feel is best.
