Double hung

Discussion about
Do they make new buildings with double hung windows? I am not a fan of those new windows that swivel or tilt (how would you describe them) just 6 inches. I want to stick my head out the window, get a real cross breeze, like real people live and not this protected luxury style of new developments lately.

and here i thought this would be about something else.
but can't you take off the safety on those windows and open them pretty wide if you want?
you usually just have to sign the "no kids" waiver

Jason, you can do that, but if you have pets you probably are not going to want to. I'm sure my cat is dumb enough to jump after a fly and fall to her death, so those windows are a big no-no for me too. Bsenders, I don't know, but I'd be interested if you find one.

The fact that windows don't open the way they used to has led me to the conclusion that if I buy a new development it has to either have a balcony, or really has to convince me with a nice, large, accessible, outdoor common roof area. But really, not being able to step outside or stick your head out the window sucks.

I don't know too many people who stick their heads out the window. I can stick my head out of my windows, but I'm too lazy to start removing the scrrens.

after years and years of working in an office building where the windows didn't open, i could not imagine living in an apartment where you can't stick your head out of the window if you should so chose. the tilt and turns are a possible compromise but the ones that just slide open two inches or can be pushed open two or three inches are ridiculous.

having windows that don't open is good so that you can't jump out after you realize your condo has lost 60% of it's value. LOL

Those little awning windows are all that open, right?

Another thing to consider about those windows: If your cat did go out that window, a good possibility, and fell on someone & hurt them, y-o-u would be legally responsible for creating that dangerous situation in the first place, no?

mine almost did. i caught her just about to commit kitty suicide. literally caught her by the tail as she was going out a thirteenth floor window. and one where she had to climb up to access it. and squeeze into a tiny space.

"Those little awning windows are all that open, right?"

Remember those little windows on the IRT that flipped open?

AR, I would just die. My heart would spontaneously combust with terror. I looked at apartments on the 20th floor, penthouse, what have you, and ended up on the ground floor because I had nightmares about the dumb but dearly beloved cat leaping to her death.

Tilt and turn windows tilt open or open 100% -- They are great to clean and beautiful. Add screens for cats.

i have to say as a cat owner (one is sitting on my arm as i type) i never open the windows wide unless i know the little ladies are in another room with the door closed. if not the 2 inches we open for air is more than enough. i don't need to stick my head out. but for those of you who have no kids and no pets and want to stick your head out go for yours.

"after years and years of working in an office building where the windows didn't open, i could not imagine living in an apartment where you can't stick your head out of the window if you should so chose."

CC, I totally agree.

Sometimes, you need to stick your head out the window to fully gauge what the temperature and humidity "feel" like, so you know how to dress accordingly.

I have double-hung windows -- with full-panel screens that slide up and out of the way, but even so, they're not in there THAT securely, and all it takes is a moderate shove to pop them out completely. For that reason, I never open my windows more than three inches, out of fear that one of my cats will take a flying leap to the windowsill and ... well, you know the rest.

Also, as far as workplaces that don't have open windows -- also in agreement. Several years ago I visited an office on the 60-something floor of the Empire State Building on a hot summer day. The office -- a full-floor office -- had all the windows open and a nice breeze blowing through. How unusual it felt to be in an office setting and feeling a fresh breeze blowing through! Now I see why they really needed PAPER WEIGHTS back in the days before A/C.

But it was so nice feeling that breeze -- almost like you were working outside!

You do need to be careful with windows. Eric Clapton's son fell to his death out of a window which the maid had tilted out to wash; not a happy tale.

I work with a cat adoption and rescue group and we mandate that all of our adopters have screens on their windows. Cats don't look down they just go after a bug, bird or anything else that catches their fancy and "high rise syndrome" is a leading cause of, at best, big vet bills and at worst huge heartaches (and worse for the cat). Many people say "why do we need screens, we never open our windows". Well you and your immediate household may be highly aware of the cat's safety but what about others who may enter the apartment: maintenance people, guests, cleaning people etc. Another thing to consider is that we have had three major blackouts in New York City the past 45 years and some areas have experienced more power outages, what would you do if the power went out and the a/c didn't work?

Double hung windows with screens are the best option for cat people but acceptable solutions can be found for many of the new windows as well. A cat adoption group should be able to help you. Please note that window bars meant to keep kids safe are of no value in protecting cats, especially curious kittens.

When I was looking for an apartment last year, I knew I was serious about a particular place when I checked it it had window screens or if they would be an easy install.

Anyone know window installers who can convert left/right sliding windows to up/down?
