Discussion about
I just moved to Great Neck to a rental 3 months ago. In that time I've gotten about 300 bucks in parking fines. They ban all the parking on the side street where the houses are overnight so all your left with is the spots in front on the buildings; which are pretty much all gone by 6 PM. I'm young and single and don't stay home to watch tv after work so I never get a spot. I'm so angry about this... [more]

Great necks is run by and for people with large single family homes who want privacy and to maintain the standards of their neighborhood. As a renter you don't register, matter or count.

Do you recall...

Be thankful: it's worse in Long Island City, where they steal your car instead of ticket it.

Stick_man - I am very familiar with GN. Try and get a sticker for the public parking lots next to the LIRR station or in the center of town. If you can't, there are several lots off of Middle Neck Road that should offer much cheaper deals than $200 per month.

Great Neck is an older neighborhood for families. They don't liek your kind (yonng and a renter) there.

i think it's pretty common to not pay your last month's rent and just let them keep your deposit, to avoid potentially losing your security altogether. i guess maybe it's a different story if you are l;eaving on bad terms with your landlord. and if you want to break your lease it's best to give 60 days notice in writing. brooklyn will be a lot more fun

Its a pretty typical upscale LI thing. They don't want renters/small apartments, they want to keep things "upscale". Very often the smaller apartments are by the trains, etc. They don't want to make things easy for you.

That being said, not sure if you want a black mark on your record, if you want to rent in the future.

What do you mean "black mark"? I could mitigate the threat by giving some notice? I'm sure he would go for it. He doesn't seem to care.

I'm not biking to my car. I'd have to bike to the car in the AM by where my train would be; get in it move it or pay the fee to park near the train (even though it's walking d from my apt.) move it and then walk back to the train.

i think alanhart was suggesting bicycle instead of car? although that wouldn't really work in great neck..

I was suggesting biking to the train, and anywhere else that you can get to without a car. As best I can tell, virtually all the apartment buildings in Great Neck are within about a mile of the train. You can probably even walk to it. Please get maps.google directions between your home and the train and report back to us on the exact distance.

And also biking to your car when you're going somewhere besides the train. And when your lease ends, choosing a place to live that allows you to get rid of your car.

But you should, in fact, explore the bus routes and schedules in Great Neck and see if you can add them to the mix.
