Safe neighborhoods that would allow you to walk to work: Gramercy Park, Murray Hill, East 50's. These are lovely residential areas, quiet bu not too staid, and offer all the amenities and services. The only drawback is that you are dependent on one subway line, the 6.
On the other hand, if you depend upon it for commuting, it's a nice one.
You can expect to pay anywhere between $3,500 and $5,000 depending on the size, view and condition. At the lower end for a 1 bedroom, higher end for a 2 bedroom. Since you are coming from out of town, it might be worth it to have a broker. The rental market is much softer than in past years, so many owners pay the broker fee. If you are not willing to pay a fee (typically 1 month these days), make sure to tell the broker upfront so they don't waste your time.

I would recommend that you also look around Columbus circle (UWS/Midtown West). There's some great apartments there that allow for an easy walk to midtown east while allowing you to enjoy all the things you are looking for.

here are a couple of listings, so you can get an idea. have i mentioned how much SE's rental search is now? but you still need nybits.com for most of the management companies, i'd think. the units in the system that can be picked up by any broker no longer show up here. a couple below seem to be conventional rentals, the others are condos. 40 sutton is a bit staid for a neighborhood. i tried to select a fairly broad range of styles, and remember that this is the high season for prices.

We have many no-fee apartments in several doorman buildings with great amenities in a variety of neighborhoods. View photos, floorplans and availability on www.rosenyc.com
