So I'm currently in the market for a upscale loft apt and looking to spend about 5k a month on a place. I found this character Jon Kobeck off of craigslist and he had what looks to be a fantastic apt to show from the posting. I made an appointment with him yesterday to see the place, just to have him cancel on me before the meeting time ( he wasn't able to get a time slot to see the apt). So I... [more]

Is there anything I an really do though? This is the posting I saw on craigslist; anyone have any idea what apt it is? I'm pretty sure it's on 17th st between 2nd and 3rd? I had guessed landmark 17, but they only have single floor apts, no triplexes ( actually if I was a betting man I would have said one of the pictures from the post was taken from the landmark 17 patio!!!) what should I do? http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/nfb/1500615927.html [less]
Craigslist is completely suspect. Consider your time saved; when you saw it, I doubt it would have been anything like the posting. There's nothing to do except avoid craigslist in the future, which I would highly recommend as it is a complete time-waster in the real estate department.
Agree with evnyc in terms of the fact that it was probably a waste of time. In any case, the weird floorplan immediately led me to think it was some place I had seen many years ago, and it is:

Don't be surprised if the apartment at that price doesn't look anything like the pictures you were given as those were stock photos of the building. Try contacting them directly, and you're welcome ;).
The ad is probably a come on. You could try calling the RE agency and speak to a manager.

AVOID BROKERS AND THEIR FEES - GO DIRECTLY TO THE SOURCE OF YOUR RENTAL NEEDS. BROKERS TEND TO TAKE YOU TO SEE THESE NO-FEE APARTMENTS FIRST AS THEY EARN 100% OF YOUR 15% BROKER'S FEE. HUSH...HUSH... THEY WILL NOT TELL YOU IT'S A NO-FEE RENTAL PROPERTY :( NOR WILL THEY REPRESENT THAT PRIOR TO SEEING THE APARTMENT. SO IF YOU NEED TO RENT, CHECK OUT THE RENTAL PROPERTY MANAGEMENT WEBSITES AND CALL THEM FOR UPDATED LISTINGS. SAVE YOURSELF THAT 15% TO BUY YOURSELF NEW FURNITURE OR HAVE A MOVE-IN WELCOME PARTY FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

You will save yourself HOURS of work and headaches galore going to the managing companies directly. This is what I did. It worked brilliantly.
inonada, right, and it looks to be this one http://streeteasy.com/nyc/rental/543265-condo-305-second-avenue-gramercy-park-new-york
anon528, one more thing. If those pictures are indicative of what you are looking for, I think you're much better off looking at StreetEasy for non-rental-building apartments from listing brokers (usually listed as for-fee). To filter out the trash, include "must have address" in your search, and avoid brokers that are obviously fishing: e.g., they work at a rental firm, they have a dozen rental listings but not sales listings and don't have a big title at their firm, etc. You'll find the apartment quality and the professionalism unbelievably higher.
In terms of the fee, I have found that for-fee listings from listing brokers end up cheaper than rental buildings, even after you take the fee into account. I've also found that the fee is negotiable, if you care about that sort of thing as compared to simply negotiating the rent directly.
In any case, good luck, and take those bits of advice from some rents a higher-end place and is crazy enough in terms of market knowledge to identify the place off that ad despite not having seen the place in many, many years (i.e., pre-renovations in those pictures).
Woops: "... from some rents a ..." should read "... from someone who rents a ..."
If it were me I would, at my leisure, call the broker back, act like a perfect client who needs something now, price no object, fee no problem, will pay blah blah upfront....and make an appointment with him,..and then cancel one minute before, rescheduling for an hour or two later...and then do it again.
"$5k" and "upscale loft" should not be used in the same sentence.
No need to be an mean, modern. The guy is looking at 1250 sq ft for $5K a month and "upscale", not necessarily prime neighborhood. Very doable, could probably do 1500 sq ft and upscale for that price with some work.
anon528 - my rule of thumb is if it doesn't have an address it isn't available or doesn't exist. Classic bait and switch. I recommend pull the plug on CL and scan SE and NY Times and start by picking only apts with addresses. There are good threads here on sourcing rentals.
Poster is smart to remain anonymous.
Poster would be even smarter to come back and take our sage advice! ;)
This is Rutherford Place, 305 Second Avenue
inonda : right on the spot. appreciate the help and i think you nailed the apartment right on the head. the photo's supplied were directly from the website. certainly rutherford place.
jimstreeteasy : pulling the now show as a return favor would certainly be justified. eye for an eye it is right? he totally deserves it.. and if i could have done this 1hr after i was stood up. i would have.. although i think calmer minds may prevail.
modern : ok point taken. when i say "upscale" i mean a place which doesn't have a river running through it after the rainstorms we had this morning. however i would think a 1br 1200-1500 sf apt for 1person to be consider "upscale".
evnyc : thanks, i will look through thos tomorrow evening and pic some places to checkout this weekend.
appreciate the help all! SE to the rescue.
I'm not sure about this, but that MIGHT be the apartment Wentin Marsalis rented when he was in the building.
I don't think those pics all came from the same apt, 30yrs. I assume you're talking about the one with the windows? Pretty nice.
yeah, this one: http://paripassu.com//images/userfiles/201/image/Rutherford/rp_bigwindow.jpg
A part of my apt has double-height ceilings (a real 20 feet) with one of those angled skylight window thingies that runs 25' by 12', so it's a rare place that I look at and say "wow, that's a nicer setup than mine" architecturally. Do you happen to have a floorplan or price of that bad boy in your databases?
it says on streeteasy it rented 11/18/09. maybe call corcoran as well
ok, to revisit this. i spent the morning looking over these websites and found a limited numbers of places (only 666 greenwich fit). Are there any other suggestions on where i should be looking aside from SE?
i would browse all the big company web sites. Being december and the way the rental market has been, many condo owners are paying the broker fees. Don't exclude the brokers, negotiate with them... these are the times. 5K a month should get you the space you are looking for anon528
