Discussion about
I still haven't found a co-op to buy, and the closing date to sell my current co-op is now only a couple months away. So I need to rent, something I haven't done in 15 years. Which of the following choices do you recommend? (1) Sign a one-year lease and stop looking for a coop for, say, six months (2) sign a lease and keep looking and somehow figure out how to get out of my lease if I get lucky and find a coop (3) get a less-than-one-year sublet and keep looking and hope I get lucky and find a co-op so I don't have to move again (4) Other

I chose option one in my case and it has hamstrung me a bit because I keep looking at places and am reticent to make offers b/c I have over 6 mos. left on the lease and do not want problems being on the hook for the remaining lease payments. (2) sounds great, depending on the management company and/or landlord.

Just go on Craigslist and look for a sublet apartment.

I would sign a one year lease and relax for 6months..don't look to buy, just enjoy; then start looking.

Also, you can rent month to month (or even day to day) in some 'residential furnished hotels' like Affinia at 155 East 50th, or look on furnishedrentals.com.

I'm moving into a new rental and also looking to buy. My new landlord is great and allows you to break the lease with 30 days notice. He figures it's easier to let people go than to have unhappy people in a building. I'd be happy to give you his info offline.
