holiday tipping envelopes

I wouldn't...I've been trying for two days to connect with the maintenance guys..I keep the envelopes with me and keep looking for them.

i don't know about this. it's definitely better to present the tips personally, but i don't think it's always feasible.

for those you see regularly, definitely make the effort. for those you see rarely, if ever, is there a management office you where you could drop off the envelopes?

great, now someone's going to mention the fact that cc and i posted at almost exactly the same time. i had this loaded two hours ago, pushed the go button the moment cc posted.

If your building has some type of computer software system setup for deliveries, work orders and personnel - you could leave it with your lobby desk person and make sure all the envelopes are addressed and typed in to the correct people. Ideally, you would receive updates when people sign for their envelopes.

If you don't have a system like this setup, I'd deliver in person.

In person is the way to go. You get to wish them a happy holiday in person. Or, a Happy New Year.

in my case we have too many people working for us to count. i personally tip the guy who maintains our building, but for the masses of other workers i deliver money to the management office.

Julia: Another idea is to leave a message with your doorman for each of the maint. staff, in writing. e.g. : Please stop by at___ (day/time). They will come to your apt.door, and you can then wish them a "Happy", and give them the envelope.

Whenever you have something that needs to be fixed in your apt. you probably do the same.

julia, make sure you can take time off from work so you can hold "tipping" hours.

so, why is your oh so good advice good for someone who has a staff of sixteen and many are never seen?

thanks for the responses. i will try to deliver them personally as i originally intended. i do have a building computer system where i can leave instructions/delivery requests to the people i don't get to see.

Why not just write checks? I've often been too busy to find everyone individually and wanted to make sure people get them before the holidays (since sometimes people like to use tips for holiday shopping) - checks are a good way to make sure no one gets stiffed.

Interesitng discussion, seems to face us all but I never really had a conversation about it. It takes us about a week to get all of the envelopes out, but we use the super to help give to some of the porters we don't run into regularly. We tip the super well, and our building is pretty established, so there was never a worry about cheating on that.

JohnDoe: Tips via checks are O.K.

huntersburg: When you do see those staff-mambers, just say: "I would have liked to give you my holiday greeting in person, but I didn't see you so I left it with the super."
If your super is honest, the porter will then reply accordingly.

If the check is cashed, you know the staff member got it...I suppose maybe an idiot super could try to cash the check
