I have purchased a Futuro range hood (link below) for installation above our Viking range in Greenwich Village (9th St.). Management company consulted with the building architect and will allow us to vent out one of the windows. I need a recommendation for a good quality contractor who can do the job cleanly, quickly and efficiently without costing us an arm and leg. Must be licensed and insured (have to submit an alternation agreement to the board). http://www.futurofuturo.com/wall-range-hood-WL27MUR-MOTION.php Here is the rough scope of work: - Submit scope of work application and COI copy to management for approval. - Remove existing Viking microwave above range hood (If anyone is interested in purchasing, email me). - Remove small cabinet above the microwave and another narrow cabinet to the right of microwave. - Install range hood. - Cut a hole in the right side of the hood chimney for duct. - Build soffit for 10" x 4.5" duct along ceiling (approx 12ft) to window. . - Cut hole in window glass for duct to exit. Seal around the hole and cleanly (as much as possible) drop down the soffit to exit at the window area. Will probably also need to cut a square out of the window shade. I need this work to be started ASAP. I am available for contractors to come check out the space and provide me with a quotation. Any refernces/referrals would be very much appreciated: ganesh2@gmail.com . Thank you. [less]
Curious about the window glass cutting. Is the window double-paned? If so, you can't cut through it because the seal will be broken and it'll get all funky and fogged up inside. Cutting through window shade also sounds kinda weird. There's a reason I suspect that i've never seen this done before. It'll be impossible for you to ever move/clean/replace that shade. Why not remove it all together since it can't ever go down or up again. After job is done, you can get a custom upholstered cornice made if you want something over top of window. Frankly, this all sounds kind of expensive to me. What kind of budget do you have in mind?
@kylewest: I had a couple contractors come in and give me very reasonable quotations, but they were booked until February and we want this done sooner. It is not a double paned window so this will not be a problem although I am open to full 4.5" pane at the top of the window. The reason for cutting through the window shade is that the apt is on the street level so we need the shades for privacy.

Ah. I see. I think I know this apt/building. I actually have that OTR Viking Convection Microwave. I still don't get how it does it's magic, but its capable of some pretty cool stuff. I've had all 4 burners and the oven going once or twice and wished I had a hood, but for the most part I haven't missed one too much. Still, bit envious you are getting one. If you want my contractor's number, I can provide it if you post an email. He was reasonable (not budget, not expensive--right in the lower end of middle) and reliable. Kept to schedule, but it was a 4 month reno we did. Will you require a licensed electrician as well? If so, my guy is a GC who arranged whatever was needed. Let me know if you could use the referral.
Just had this done in our apt by my contractor a wolf hood over our wolf range -contractor is great jean david ( new york french contracting) 347-993-2838. Our is vented thru the wallbuthe could certainly do your job. Good luvk!
@leelaura -- thank you! I will reach out to him for a quote.
@kylewest -- yes, please do send me your contractor's contact info: ganesh2@gmail.com
Your link goes to a 27" range hood with 940 cfm. What is the width of your range? How many burners? Sorry to ask these basic questions if you've already made a commitment to that particular hood.
