Discussion about
Just closed on my new coop in brooklyn heights/downtown BK. Currently has 40 year old veneer parquet tiles glued down to the cement in very rough shape. The board says I am not allowed to float anything over... I need to rip it out or refinish. I decided on a fully floating engineered wood that will not need any staples, glue, or nails. I am looking for someone cheap, but also licensed (management company rules). I imagine ripping out is ripping out... don't need a super talented guy for that. I also imagine the click together floating floor is also easier than most other types? Any suggestions? Any idea on a psf rate for removal? Currently the removal quote I got is almost 2x the $2 psf estimate I got for laying down the new wood :(

I ripped my old flooring out myself and threw it away myself in small quantities, at a cost of $0psf.

Then I laid my click & float floor covering down myself (easy, but I did a bad job in some places -- I was in a mad rush to move in), at a cost of $0psf.

Did you live in a coop that required insurance and management corp approval if done by an outsider? But they didnt require anything from you to do it on your own?

most if not all coops require that.
And you doing it yourself is covered by your required homeowner's policy.

No, nothing required from Board/mgmt for my DIY. Super was impressed that I was doing it myself, and didn't fuss about trash ... and even rebuffed Sanitation guys who got tired of collecting it. Anyway, small amounts of construction debris from DIY jobs are officially permitted by DSNY policy, per their website.

My coop is very relaxed. Definitely all contractors must provide proof of insurance, but approval is only needed for substantial structural changes, and the building is flexible in enforcing time-of-day & materials transporation rules (within reason).

I used a really good guy named Jose who did an amazing job on my herringbone floors. He managed to sand and stain Brazilian cherry into a rich walnut color and even filled it the crevices between all the panels of wood. His number is 917-731-4331.

Cheap and licensed = Carlos Salazar from Inti Interior Finish & Wood Floors. I recommended him to my friend who needed his rental apartment's wood floor refinished and they did a great job at a discounted price since it was my recommendation. Feel free to call him and tell him I sent you his way. Call him at his cell# 646-281-2659 or contact via his website www.intirenovation.com

best,
adam k.
