Discussion about
I'm in the market for one, and perplexed at the plethora of choices these days. I'm waffling between a Royal Everlast and the Aerus (Electrolux) Guardian Platinum. I'm curious what you all use. And before you say "Dyson" -- I'm over bagless models.
>I'm over bagless models.
Interesting
why not try miele?
Miele.
I checked out the Mieles. Not impressed. Very plasticky with cheap hoses.
I'm surprised you're not using a broom. They work great on REAL linoleum.
Why not buy girl scout cookies instead?
sorry Matt, another vote for Miele. Our current one has been going for several years, and is better than our old Electrolux.
ali r.
"Several years" is not really that big of a deal, given that Electroluxes have a LIFETIME guarantee.
Most Hoovers made pre-1983 are still alive and running. In fact, they command quite a premium on eBay.
Dyson is the bomb. All the consumer magazines rate it the best. Sorry you hate bagless, but its just WORLD's better.
If you have a dog, Dyson is the only way to go.
So I guess the question is what's a reccomendation for high end vaccum's if you don't want the best one.
Everone reccomends Dyson because it's that good!
Happy with my Dyson as well sorry.
Also bought the mint robot sweeper. Run it once every 3 days.Love it. Just charge and change a swiffer sheet, so easy. (but pricey)
"Everyone" recommends Dyson only because most people are too lazy to look beyond Walmart or Bed, Bath, and Beyond for a good vacuum.
Consumer Reports is inherently biased against high-priced items, particularly those that don't participate in the traditional retail distribution channels (Kirby, Aerus, Rainbow, etc.).
However, if you look at the ONLINE video reviews, you'll find how poorly Dyson does against these much-better performers.
matt, i think all vacuum are made of plastics, i never seen one with solid brass/steel/iron construction
Royal Everlasts are all-metal, as is the Aerus Guardian Platinum.
The Royal metal-bodied uprights seem to be more for hotels and other places with large expanses of carpet, and you'd need a basket or something to haul around the hoses and tools.
I've had a Dyson canister and a Miele canister, and like the Miele better. Good solid feel to it, rolls around smoothly, the cord-retract actually works, and the motor ramps up so it doesn't dim the lights the way the same-amps Dyson did. The bag and airflow are arranged so that a full-ish bag doesn't make it lose suction.
There was nothing else all that irritating about the Dyson, but it seemed as if the insides were always filthy and hard to clean, and all the clear plastic made it visible.
If I had carpet instead of just a few rugs, I'd go for a Miele upright. There seem to be a lot of vacuum aficionados on YouTube vouching for them.
I've used a Sears model for years. Hepafilter bag or whatever and nice solid attachments including two motorized brush attachments of different sizes. It sucks up all the dirt. I don't know what the Miele will do extra if the $350 Sears vacuum is already getting all the dirt. Just my two cents (coming from someone who happily spends silly amounts for things often enough).

kylewest, exactly. I can't say that either fancy vacuum works better than the Eureka Dirt Devil I used to have in my tenement hovel, or whether it matters if they do. It's as if this apartment "deserves" more.
Whatever you get for your girl to use twice a week, also get an Electrolux ergorapido ultra+ ... cordless bagless stick vac with removable hand vac, ready to remove from base as soon as you notice cat-sized dust bunnies. No wrestling it out of closet and dealing with power cord.
AH - totally agree with that about the Electrolux. It's a really handy thing to have for all those less than big vacuum chores.
>Whatever you get for YOUR GIRL to use twice a week, also get an Electrolux ERGORAPIDO ultra
Some racist marketing by electrolux? :)
whatever u decide, get a canister..i tried an upright for a bit but found it really annoying and hard to move around.
Consumer Reports is inherently biased against high-priced items, particularly those that don't participate in the traditional retail distribution channels (Kirby, Aerus, Rainbow, etc.).
Consumer reports has it's flaws, a great deal has been written about their unreliable car ratings.. which sometimes has a sampling rate of only 100 cars. I thought the world of them years ago, but real life experience has shown the ratings lacking to say the least.
While we're on cleaning, for almost 20 years our cleaner was an elderly man. When he got sick and retired, we decided there was no reason two people couldn't manage four rooms. It turns out that lots of five-minute tasks keep the place almost as clean as he did, at a savings of $400 per month. (Plus sick pay, Christmas, etc.)
I like the Kirby Sentria 2, but that might not be the kind of price point NYCMatt is looking for.
I had 3 vacuum cleaners before the Miele. 2 stick
Hoovers (lasted 1 year each), Sharp (3 years). Miele - going on 10.
NWT: our instantaneous reaction upon outsourcing cleaning the first time was why we hadn't we done it before!

Amazon buyers agree re: Miele - its the best rated expensive vaccuum cleaner.
I am a dyson junkie. My now 10 year old canister is at our weekend house, which we usually use even though there is central vacuum in the house. We use a 5 year old dyson "ball" upright here, which is simple, effective, and easy to maneuver and store. We also have rechargeable dysons in both houses -- if you have a shedding dog, it is great. The one thing the Miele has over the dyson in my view is that is is quieter.
NWT: Our cleaning person moved back to her native country 18 months ago. We did not replace her. Thought that was very liberating for a while. For a while. That while is ending . . . very soon.
"I like the Kirby Sentria 2, but that might not be the kind of price point NYCMatt is looking for."
For a good vacuum, ANY price point is fine.
The Kirby, though, seems to be overly fussy in using its attachments.
"Amazon buyers agree re: Miele - its the best rated expensive vaccuum cleaner."
On AMAZON.
Most high-ends aren't sold on Amazon, though.
>Most high-ends aren't sold on Amazon, though.
Jason has a secret legal memo that disagrees with you.
another big vote for Miele. that being said, daughter in law swears by dyson and she is the research queen of clean.
"The Kirby, though, seems to be overly fussy in using its attachments."
LOL.
Miele, for me.
I liked the color selection.
It works just fine.
"daughter in law swears by dyson and she is the research queen of clean."
I used to swear by Dyson, too.
Until I was re-introduced to the GOOD stuff that you can't find at all the usual retail outlets.
Another vote for Miele quality and longevity - concerns about plastic versus metal casing miss the point of how well thay clean and keep dust/dirt from recirculating into the air and how reliable they are.
But they're too cheaply made. You can feel it in the cheap plastic hoses.
A typical review of the Miele:
"I've replaced the hose twice due to a short in the suction control handle $$. I had to fix a short in the retractable cord... it no longer retracts. Bags are very small... barley holds the clean up of a couple of family meals. Clogs frequently and its difficult to clear clogs. Hose is a cheap plastic and isn't quite long enough. Germans must be a bit shorter of stature. Its difficult to change floor levels on the power head. On of switch isn't very responsive... I end up turning it on and off a few times as I kick the switch.
I'm currently looking for a completely metal vacuum with indistructable parts (like the iron man suit) that can be used like a shop vac. It must have a big fat hose and a hurricane of suction. The power head needs to have some type of mechanism that can grind up small things like tooth picks, fluffy pop corn, pizza crust, sucker sticks, pine needles and even very small toys before allowing them to pass. The brush needs to be strong enough to loosen or grind down any type of food etc. that has latched to the carpet."
I'm very hard on my vacuum and not had a problem with the hose. But I sweep up daily with a broom in high traffic areas like dining table & living room.
"Until I was re-introduced to the GOOD stuff that you can't find at all the usual retail outlets."
Dyson's do the job, and cost apparently a fraction of what the "good" ones cost, so its probably worth it in the end to ONLY spend $500 on a vaccuum and replace it every 5 years than to buy a $2,000 one.
I always find it funny that Matt, who lives in decidely not 'good' area Washington Heights, is so snobby about everything.
Jason where do you live?
"Dyson's do the job, and cost apparently a fraction of what the "good" ones cost, so its probably worth it in the end to ONLY spend $500 on a vaccuum and replace it every 5 years than to buy a $2,000 one."
That's the point.
Dysons DON'T "do the job" compared with the high-end models.
And in this age of trying to be as "green" as possible, using renewable resources, and -- dare I even suggest it -- putting AMERICANS back to work -- this notion of disposable consumerism is working against the ethic of ecological conservation and economic sustainability.
I agree nyc10023. Never had any issues with my "cheaply made" miele.
"Dysons DON'T "do the job" compared with the high-end models."
I don't know any floor in Manhattan that would notice the difference.
"I don't know any floor in Manhattan that would notice the difference."
The floors that still have dust and grit left behind by the Dysons.
this is super-quickly becoming my new favorite thread.
I have a roomba, which is fantastic, except I can't help but follow it around.
I have a refurbished Dyson that was $201 from woot.com. Apparently my floors are covered with dust and grit, but I used the savings vs. an all-metal vacuum to buy a EuroCave, so I'm usually too drunk to notice.
"I'm currently looking for a completely metal vacuum with indistructable parts (like the iron man suit) that can be used like a shop vac"
@NYCMatt - How about just getting the shop vac? Do you operate a kindergarten out of your apartment?
Yikes, your place sounds like a mess.
And btw, I have an Electrolux and it's great. Heavy, but great.
Broadbent: That was not MY quote. It was a quote by someone reviewing the Miele.
no post from me here--tho my electrluc hepa harmony is the best ive had yet--half the price of the miele my old cleaning lady broke numerous times--works better, too
Royal = raw power.
Royal = noise.
:(
Lux = power and flexibility, but not quite as strong on rugs as the Royal.
Lux = whisper-quiet
If you have a home up in the cold boonies, say up in Columbia County, is there a better type of vacuum cleaner for that environment?
Depends on the size of the house and how much carpeting you have.
What percent of net worth should be spent on a vacuum?
I really don't think anyone earning less than six figures can afford anything over $1700.
;)
are you asking for a regular person or apt23?
NYCMatt seems absolutely obsessed with "phenomenal suction," "indestructable parts," "iron man suits," etc. Judging from his rude posts and generally cantancerous nature, I don't think it's a vacuum he's looking for. Perhaps he should to to 10th Avenue and 28th Street late at night, and he might actually find what he's looking for. The suction will probably be great, but I guarantee it won't be free (for him, at least). Might contribute to a nicer attitude!

Another poster with reading comprehension difficulties. It was a QUOTE from SOMEONE ELSE I posted.
Oy.

Luckily, at least for the time being, the cash flow is still (at least potentially) in MY direction.
Crazy Riccardo
Yes I am and proud of it!!!!!! But not crazy enough to have committed to my purchase of a New York City pad. Joined in on SE to find nice people, and only found liars, losers, and freaks.
Sorry, I didn't finish. NYCMatt and Truth are probably one in the same. Wonder if she(he) is still managing Justin Beiber and Luciano Pavarotti??????
CRAZY? YES
RICH? YES
I make $20,000 a year and own a Guardian Platinum and just love it. Worth the price and more.
NYCMatt, I earn 20,000 and own a guardian Platinum and I love it. Rushman
NYCMatt, why don't you just get the Airstorm/Patriot? If I lived in the US that's what I'd go for. I'm tossing up between the Lux Platinum and 2 Sebo models atm after 29 yrs of Kirby ownership.
Only the true AERUS ELECTROLUX - not the $300 version sold around works! Also, I have had mine since 1992 and the only I need is a new hose and it sucked up the 4 metal balls used for their demo. That's C L E AN!
We vacuum to clean not to show off fancy names advertising influence brains.
Deebot is far better than electrolux i would recommend you deebot m80 it is really helpful.
Electrolux mess up with you all the time

DYSON IS AMAZING!!!! I owned mines for 3 years, it broke down, they told me to drop it off at a UPS center 2 blocks from my house, and 4 days later I picked it up as good as new. Their customer service is incredible!
