Discussion about
I'm in the market for one, and perplexed at the plethora of choices these days. I'm waffling between a Royal Everlast and the Aerus (Electrolux) Guardian Platinum. I'm curious what you all use. And before you say "Dyson" -- I'm over bagless models.

"Several years" is not really that big of a deal, given that Electroluxes have a LIFETIME guarantee.

Most Hoovers made pre-1983 are still alive and running. In fact, they command quite a premium on eBay.

If you have a dog, Dyson is the only way to go.
So I guess the question is what's a reccomendation for high end vaccum's if you don't want the best one.
Everone reccomends Dyson because it's that good!

Happy with my Dyson as well sorry.

Also bought the mint robot sweeper. Run it once every 3 days.Love it. Just charge and change a swiffer sheet, so easy. (but pricey)

"Everyone" recommends Dyson only because most people are too lazy to look beyond Walmart or Bed, Bath, and Beyond for a good vacuum.

Consumer Reports is inherently biased against high-priced items, particularly those that don't participate in the traditional retail distribution channels (Kirby, Aerus, Rainbow, etc.).

However, if you look at the ONLINE video reviews, you'll find how poorly Dyson does against these much-better performers.

The Royal metal-bodied uprights seem to be more for hotels and other places with large expanses of carpet, and you'd need a basket or something to haul around the hoses and tools.

I've had a Dyson canister and a Miele canister, and like the Miele better. Good solid feel to it, rolls around smoothly, the cord-retract actually works, and the motor ramps up so it doesn't dim the lights the way the same-amps Dyson did. The bag and airflow are arranged so that a full-ish bag doesn't make it lose suction.

There was nothing else all that irritating about the Dyson, but it seemed as if the insides were always filthy and hard to clean, and all the clear plastic made it visible.

If I had carpet instead of just a few rugs, I'd go for a Miele upright. There seem to be a lot of vacuum aficionados on YouTube vouching for them.

I've used a Sears model for years. Hepafilter bag or whatever and nice solid attachments including two motorized brush attachments of different sizes. It sucks up all the dirt. I don't know what the Miele will do extra if the $350 Sears vacuum is already getting all the dirt. Just my two cents (coming from someone who happily spends silly amounts for things often enough).

Whatever you get for your girl to use twice a week, also get an Electrolux ergorapido ultra+ ... cordless bagless stick vac with removable hand vac, ready to remove from base as soon as you notice cat-sized dust bunnies. No wrestling it out of closet and dealing with power cord.

Consumer reports has it's flaws, a great deal has been written about their unreliable car ratings.. which sometimes has a sampling rate of only 100 cars. I thought the world of them years ago, but real life experience has shown the ratings lacking to say the least.

While we're on cleaning, for almost 20 years our cleaner was an elderly man. When he got sick and retired, we decided there was no reason two people couldn't manage four rooms. It turns out that lots of five-minute tasks keep the place almost as clean as he did, at a savings of $400 per month. (Plus sick pay, Christmas, etc.)

I am a dyson junkie. My now 10 year old canister is at our weekend house, which we usually use even though there is central vacuum in the house. We use a 5 year old dyson "ball" upright here, which is simple, effective, and easy to maneuver and store. We also have rechargeable dysons in both houses -- if you have a shedding dog, it is great. The one thing the Miele has over the dyson in my view is that is is quieter.

NWT: Our cleaning person moved back to her native country 18 months ago. We did not replace her. Thought that was very liberating for a while. For a while. That while is ending . . . very soon.

For a good vacuum, ANY price point is fine.

The Kirby, though, seems to be overly fussy in using its attachments.

But they're too cheaply made. You can feel it in the cheap plastic hoses.

A typical review of the Miele:

"I've replaced the hose twice due to a short in the suction control handle $$. I had to fix a short in the retractable cord... it no longer retracts. Bags are very small... barley holds the clean up of a couple of family meals. Clogs frequently and its difficult to clear clogs. Hose is a cheap plastic and isn't quite long enough. Germans must be a bit shorter of stature. Its difficult to change floor levels on the power head. On of switch isn't very responsive... I end up turning it on and off a few times as I kick the switch.

I'm currently looking for a completely metal vacuum with indistructable parts (like the iron man suit) that can be used like a shop vac. It must have a big fat hose and a hurricane of suction. The power head needs to have some type of mechanism that can grind up small things like tooth picks, fluffy pop corn, pizza crust, sucker sticks, pine needles and even very small toys before allowing them to pass. The brush needs to be strong enough to loosen or grind down any type of food etc. that has latched to the carpet."

Dyson's do the job, and cost apparently a fraction of what the "good" ones cost, so its probably worth it in the end to ONLY spend $500 on a vaccuum and replace it every 5 years than to buy a $2,000 one.

I always find it funny that Matt, who lives in decidely not 'good' area Washington Heights, is so snobby about everything.

That's the point.

Dysons DON'T "do the job" compared with the high-end models.

And in this age of trying to be as "green" as possible, using renewable resources, and -- dare I even suggest it -- putting AMERICANS back to work -- this notion of disposable consumerism is working against the ethic of ecological conservation and economic sustainability.

NYCMatt seems absolutely obsessed with "phenomenal suction," "indestructable parts," "iron man suits," etc. Judging from his rude posts and generally cantancerous nature, I don't think it's a vacuum he's looking for. Perhaps he should to to 10th Avenue and 28th Street late at night, and he might actually find what he's looking for. The suction will probably be great, but I guarantee it won't be free (for him, at least). Might contribute to a nicer attitude!
