I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE. as a newbie with an interest in buying a 1BR in the near future, i started browsing the discussion threads here at streeteasy a few months ago. from reading the threads, i have learned SO MUCH, and i thank all of you posters that have inadvertently contributed to my crash course in learning real estate. really. but.... I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE: over the past few weeks, i've realized that i now only check the discussion threads because i am totally ENTERTAINED by the idiots that post on here (i suppose this includes me). no really -- it's kind of a choice between watching a Seinfeld rerun, or listening to idiots that go on and on about inane hypothetical situations, use logical fallacies dime a dozen, don't know the difference between THEIR and THEY'RE, or ITS and IT'S, and simply don't know how to put together the most basic arguments. don't get me wrong; no one's perfect, but DAYAAAAM people, you all are a funny bunch. the one's that entertain me the most are the morons that REALLY REALLY TRULY think that they know what they're talking about. you fools -- you know who you are -- many many thanks. of course, i'm convinced that the joke's on me. these morons, i'm convinced, are just 24-year-old kids that kill time at temp jobs posting here and getting a kick out of how many rational people actually waste time trying to respond to / refute them (mea culpa!). thank you, guys. bottom of my heart. [less]
Tom Cruise can play three parts: JuiceMan, Kylewest, and Urbandigs.
Johnny Depp would love to be Spunky, but Jack Nicholson might want the role.
Stevejhx: Christian Slater.
Oops, that was a typo. I meant Christian Bale. He's clearly the actor to play Stevejhx.
I think Steve said he is fat, grey and balding / shaved and has man tits. Not sure that Bale is the right guy.
VVerain, thank you for your interest in my tits.
LIC - sorry my question was rhetorical and does not require a response. from your tone, i am guessing that you do not believe that market failures exist (or are, indeed, anomalies). that's cool. you'll pardon me, but i'm gonna politely bow out of having to prove it to you, because as a wise man once told me: "in the end, mud wrestling with a pig just gets you muddy."
...and a less-wise man once told me: "dude, just google it." you might wanna try that.
p.s. LIC, you're a douche.
but not as big a douche as steve.
though vverain probably takes the cake for douche-ness.
hey poorishlady, make some moneyish, you douche.
f**k rent control - i want food control. i wanna walk into a gristedes, flash my FC card and get my filet mignon for $1. i wanna walk into your local coffeehouse, order up a grande whatever douche drink, be quoted $8, and reply back: nope sorry paying for food is for suckas.
then, when i'm old and don't wanna eat anymore, i wanna be able to pass my FC card onto my cousin so that he can use it.
Gristedes? Nah. Wholefoods. Citarella. Hey. You know what. I wanna personal chef. Whose gonna subsidize that?
paul10003, there are a lot of people in this city who have that exact same attitude.
about food control? or about you being a bigger douche than LIC?
oh god, i fear i may only be entertaining MYSELF now. great fun, great fun.
No, I said, I want everything controlled. But what I want is PRICES to be controlled downwards, but INCOMES to be controlled upwards. That way, I could spend less money but save more. They should legislate 25% annual compound yields in savings accounts, and hold my rent down to 1972 levels. Then I'd be as rich as petrfitz by the end of the month.
Petrfitz is a fine man, upstanding citizen, of the highest intellect. and compassion for those less fortunate. ... did i mention compassion?
I still think Christian Bale will do a great job as stevejhx.
Paul10003 ---- you called me a douche? First time I've ever been called that. I think Paul Giamatti will play your part.
I can do Christian Bale. No probs.
I think Bart Giamatti will play Paul10003.
VVerain: That was way too subtle.
poorishlady: if you haven't already figured it out from the tone of this thread, i'll be explicit: this entire thing - all 118 posts - is total utter 100% pure, no additives or preservatives BULLSHIT. we're just horsing around because i think we're all a bit stupid and immature. don't take offense, ok?
hugs and kisses,
Paul
p.s. i'd appreciate better insults than bart giamatti. you can do better!
paul10003: I think Vverain was alluding not to the elder Giamatti's brilliant career as a university president and baseball commissioner, but rather to his more recent occupation as a corpse.
I think Paul is starting to lose it. However, I was amused after I called him on his talking out of his ass, when his response was - go look at google . . .
if i recall correctly, i think you're saying i talk out of my ass because i mentioned that there is such a thing as a "market failure". ........ to be clear, i talk out of my ass all the time -- and i'm told i'm quite good at it -- but i'm not sure that acknowledging the existence of market failures is a case in point. i told you to google it in the same way i would tell someone that challenged me to provide evidence that the world is round.
re: giamatti. i confess that i don't follow baseball at all. which i'm pretty sure is one more reason i'm a moron.
Surely this needs to be updated, how poor people act on Streeteasy needs to be called out. Some of the worst
Speaking of Stevejhx. Seeing that he even sucked W81 into debate at one time makes me feel better about having taken him so seriously in the "Price controls coming for healthcare" thread.
How did I know it was NYCNovice / MultiCityRenter / FoolishRenter / xyz / abc / whoknowswhoelse ? etc. etc. would be the one to bump this old "confessions" thread and probably all these other 4,5,6 year old threads that have been reappearing
I wish I could take credit for Paul10003; he had me laughing out loud in this thread. SE Discussions are still best "stuck at desk can't get out" break; you just have to go back to old threads. I'll try to refrain from reviving pure nonsense ones, but this one was too good; really resonated with me. My only regret is that I did not start watching when original cast was still starring. By the time I came in, a whole new cast was dominating the discussions, although it looks like Stevejhx was a constant.
Well, NYCNovice, I think you nailed it: entertainment value. I enjoyed it for the sheer hypothetical speculation aspect, how it led into long threads, people tussling it all out, when it was just fantasy. I seriously wondered why people paid such high carrying costs to buy when it seemed to me that rents were a little less high, but I could see that there is no magical economic rule or principle that was being violated. Now, why this rent-to-buy formula debate of steve's was a no-starter never got into a serious discussion of the premise's flaws is all about the personalities, but I had actually hoped something would be learned along the way other than people's personalities, so I read. All I ever came up with in my own mind, though, was that no one was taking into consideration change. Rents have continued to climb. Purchasing costs of those years don't look so bad now. Interest rates didn't go up; they went down. The other thing I had missed was cash: I can't conceive of parking a million bucks of cash into an investment property, so I couldn't see that there are lots of people who were doing it. And then there's the sea changes of neighborhoods. Lastly, people who posted the most were working the least at their real jobs.
Reviving this old thread for RichardBerg's benefit. This is one of the threads I have archived my "Streeteasy Dialogues" cocktail table book if I ever getting around to researching how to do it.
I kept throwing the idea out there because I was hoping someone else would take the idea and make it a reality. No such luck . . yet.
multicityresident, I also love this era of SE posting. The banter was really something special. It was just so much more aggressive and insulting back then. Take me back to pre-September ‘08!
Whatever happened to Jim Hones? I hated him more than anyone else.
For me as a broker naively jumping into the fray, it was certainly trial by fire! Thanks to old Streeteasy (and Seinfeld), I went out and started my own company.

@lrschober - I wasn't on SE when Jim Hones was at his peak; by the time I started paying attention there was a whole new cast of characters, but I am guessing he was pretty bad given the fact that despising him was the one thing all the factions had in common.
By the time I started paying attention, the villains were stevejhx, Truth, and the troll-of-constantly-evolving-screen names. It took me awhile to get the point with stevejhx and Truth that others were at, but I got there eventually.
With respect to the content of this thread, I absolutely loved Paul10003, as well as the banter that ensued. I am not familiar enough with most of the posters in this thread to have an opinion on the casting, with the exception of stevejhx; and on that point, I like Christopher Walken for the role of stevejhx.
Were I ever honored to the point of making the cast, I would want Betty White to play me.
@keith - I have always been impressed by your ability to rise above the fray in a way that I, at times, cannot. Again, it has been great watching your business grow over the past 10 years. I suspect unflinching good nature is an element of your success.
Absolutely, the intensity of the original Streeteasy gang was quite palpable. I certainly got plenty of laughs from the various characters especially West 67th Street (it made it even more funny when I discovered who he actually was!) And of course let's not forget West81st Street, he actually received his 15 minutes when the New York times followed him around as he did his open house commentary which he then reported back to Streeteasy.
I remember grabbing a coffee with West 81st Street, we met downtown, I had no idea who I was meeting but I thought I was meeting a woman. I have no idea why I thought that! We were at a kind of modern French cafe in the village, I had a very Seinfeld (think Kramer when he leaves the upper west side and gets lost downtown) moment when the waiter rolled off the various coffee offerings. W81 looked up, just a little bit quizzically, and said he'd just like a cup of black coffee. The funniness of the moment might not translate here!
still funny
Wait, what? I STILL don’t know who w67th was?! Don’t worry; I don’t expect you to tell me. If w67th had wanted me to know, he would have told me. I wish him well on his yacht in Ibiza or wherever else he is docking it these days. :)
and yes re w81st; he and NWT were in a league of their own, especially with respect to the Upper West Side. Alan Hart was also an incredible font of knowledge (and humor) on an incredible range of subjects, with great depth on many aspects of NYC . I was sad to see him get caught up in the warfare and ultimately sign off SE. I have no doubt all three are doing well and still immersed in NYC real estate - they were clearly the real deal who, like so many others on here today, make SE an invaluable resource for dilettantes like me. We could have easily gotten crushed by purchasing a new condo development when we first arrived. We were ripe for the picking.
That's right Alan was also pretty funny and a very nice guy. Had the pleasure of working with him a little bit as well.
Call me a little bit crazy or off here, but I always thought about Patrick Bateman when reading some of West 67th street's posts.. FYI I actually didn't get to meet him, but I did discover who he was. May have been before your time but there were a couple of Streeteasy meetups.
Ha! I didn't picture w67th as a dangerous psycho; more like Charlie Sheen during his tiger blood days.
Lol, just some of the crazy comments about how much he was bench pressing that day.

best reason to come here are the comments
some are good
some are bad
