(Discussing Rental at 115 East 92nd Street) If you are thinking about renting at this prestigious Upper East Side address, there are a few things you should know about 115 East 92nd... There is no doorman or concierge; elevator personnel is provided. And, although several of the gentlemen are very efficient and courteous, you will still have to deal with a few personalities. There is one gentleman who, even after my living there four years, could never remember on which floor I lived. Sometimes he took me to the floor above; other times, to the penthouse, when he could not go any farther. I wasn't the only one he had such a problem with. Other elevator men insist on using their cell phones, Game-Boys, and music devices while they carry you to your floor. Then you have the gentleman who stands outside the building to have a smoke and on his cellphone. If you're ringing for the elevator, expect to wait a while before he finishes his cigarette. He hates working there anyway, and you will hear about that. And if you complain to the Super, you can be sure he will take the complaint directly to the employee...giving the employee all of the details, including your name. You will know that, because this employee will confront you directly about your complaint. That made for a pleasant ride on the elevator. Be sure you check out the proposed color scheme for the hallways that is on the third floor. Management has been working on this for at least a year. Ask about progress on redecorating and refurbishing the place. Management also requires that the elevator men wear their full uniform (either wool or a synthetic of similar weight) during summer. There is no air conditioning in the lobby or halls...just a fan hitched to the table in the lobby by a metal chain. It's pretty uncomfortable. The Super is very concientous, especially about recycling. In fact, he checked our garbage on several occasions and pulled out a Lands' End catalogue that I had failed to place with other papers for recycling one time. He also left me a note explaining the illegality of my failing to recycle such items as well as the potentials for fines. Be sure to confirm the times that the service elevator is manned. Although the stated hours are 9 to 5, the station is not always covered. On most days, the handyman doesn't arrive before 11 am, and that leaves the Super to cover the service elevator. He may not always be willing to operate it if there are more pressing matters. Thefts were a problem from time to time...mostly umbrellas and an occasional bicycle. But that's your problem, if you are the one who left the item in the hallway (The safety of the hallways cannot be assured; afterall it's the other tenants that you have to worry about). These are just a few items. You might want to check some of them out... [less]
