I know this is primarily a form for sales, but I would still like to make a posting about the rental building in which I live, 75 West Street. If anybody is thinking about moving into this building – THINK AGAIN. The landlord (or should I say slumlord) advertises the building as a luxury high rise but it is fast becoming a run-down tenement. There are numerous problems to the common areas. The list includes: 1) carpet so dirty and stained that steam cleaning them does no good; some floors have bleach stains, others are so dirty mold has started to grow; 2) Water stains in the ceiling tiles; 3) 2 of the 8 dryers are broken; at least 1 other malfunctions such that enough steam and heat is omitted to cause the entire second floor to be full of steam; 4) The sidewalks are not washed and thus smell of dog urine; 5) Today, only 1 of 3 elevators was working. One was stuck halfway open on the 12th floor. When the doorman called the repair company he was told that the repair company was instructed by management not to send anybody because the management company would not pay overtime. In addition, the heaters in the individual units seem to need repair at least once a month and the bath tubs need to be ‘snaked’ at least once every two month. The old handy-man used to joke with me about how crappy the heaters and bathtubs were. I’ve complained to the doormen (who I really like), but they just laugh – they’ve tried talking to the SOB who runs the building (not the super, who has no authority to repair anything that costs money) only to be told nothing would be done. This is crazy in a building where 1 bedroom apartments rent for well over $3000/month. The only saving grace is that I have purchased a building in a new development and will be moving out in the months to come. [less]
