Discussion about
Hi - moving to a new space that will require interior design, and also some renovations (bathroom). Do I start first finding an interior designer? Or start with the bathroom contractor? Also, any recommended resources to find an interior designer would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can recommend Francois Tenenbaum- www.francoistenenbaum.com

Would get a designer first to do look at the apt, do the measurements and the drawings and then the designer may have contractors they work with. If you want to use your own that would work with the designer that could be done too.

Personally I would start with the Interior Designer.

1-Have a game plan before finding out, how to realize it.

2-An interior design may be able to give you more options and scenarios. May have more of an aesthetic sense and access to more sources.

3-In many cases an interior designer can also help you by referring the right contractors/trades people (and not limited to one given contractors payroll)

I would also start with the designer and strongly recommend i4interiors, especially if you like a hip modern look. http://www.i4-interiors.com/Philosophy.html Pricing is also very reasonable and you can buy whatever you need at trade discounts. She also works with contractors and can help with renovations.

I agree with Clarence, I used Jamie Nesbitt Weber a few months ago to help with my apartment renovation, it was a small renovation but we had to remove a tub and install a shower in the Bathroom along with fixing up a hopelessly outdated Kitchen. Its worth the money at least to get a grip on what needs to be done in the apartment.
Jamie was well worth every penny.

Hurting,

Bathrooms can be tricky, I am a general contractor in NYC and i have done maybe 100 bathrooms. Of the 100 bathrooms there might have been a designers twice.

I would 1st go to a tile showroom and look around, they will even help you with design. Then find a good contractor and your done.

how do designers generally price themselves? per hour? or a commission off the price of your furniture?

everyone is right about how tricky bathrooms can be. we used our architect as our designer also and he was invaluable. i had tried to go the route of talking to various people at showrooms and tile companies but at the end of the day you need someone who understands your building requirements and city codes. this avoids some really expensive mistakes. so if you need an architect for the job, you may want to consider having him/her fill both shoes.

Depends on the job- most designers will charge a percentage of the work - usually between 25-35%; but if its a smaller job or just a drawing job than they may charge per hour or per drawing. All depends on the scope of the work. Typically its $75-150/hour depending on the scope of the work and a minimum of $750 per drawing depending on again the scope- how much detailed specs, etc are included

NYC, Times are tough I know great architects and designers that would charge either by the hour or even just consulting fees. A year ago they would get a percentage of the whole job which would be costly. Prices vary per hour I would say anywhere from 75-$300.00 is more like it.

As far as codesand building requirements, you dont need an architect for that in just doing a bathroom. You should be able (usually have to) get an alteration agreement from your buildings management co. That will tell you the building requirements. As far as the city goes, the plumber should file with them, nothing you have to worry about. The contractor should also be able to help you.

any recommendations for finding an architect who takes on projects of modest scale? we're fairly new to this, and don't have many peers in the process. i'm finding it difficult to identify who the right person or firm might be...i don't want to offend or be offended based on the scope of my project and budget!

How modest? You need to hire someone who understands your needs and budget, who can hand-hold you through this process, but yet be realistic about the pricing. www.DavidEstreich.com They will guide you through the whole process...very experienced, excellent architects

I used Jamie Weber last year, she was amazing. Very talented and detail oriented. I had my whole apartment renovated, 2 bathrooms and our Kitchen and Master Bedroom, with a small study. Jamie measured and did all of the drawings. We felt so comfortable with her, she is very down to earth and explained the whole design process, answered all of our questions patiently - and believe me I had a lot of questions. Its really worth it to have a designer work with you. Her website is jamie-design.com

I worked with Nina from Haus Interior she is absolutely fantastic. When I first met her, she was designing some model apartments in a rental building downtown called 600 Washington. I guess the goal was to have one home for a single guy, one for a single female and one for a family. You should have seen those apartments after the design was complete. Each was apartment was unique and had a different atmosphere and vibe. I knew then, that if I ever needed a designer I would use Nina. www.hausinterior.com
