Discussion about
Hey everyone, I have a client who is planning on doing a renovation but wanted to know which magazines are best for Manhattan-centric renovations. The idea isn't that they have long articles, but lots of pictures and, most importantly, don't waste lots of pages on painting the exterior of your house or how to landscape your backyard (as most of us will never have one). I personally think Dwell is a cool magazine, and House and Garden does have some good stuff (obviously I don't focus on the gardens). Any other suggestions? Even a trade magazine with EVERY dishwasher, etc, would be useful.

I like New York Spaces. Why not provide your client with internet sites

There is a website called Remodelista.com that could be a good resource -- the founders are Brooklyn brownstone based but it has a lot of NYC-wide applicability and even lists contractors/designers with sample photos of their work. I also love the UK magazine Living Etc., which I think fills a gap on the US side. Not good for sources (all the shops will be in UK) but I like it for tear sheets, ideas.

It is a little hard to find:
The World of Interiors -- taste, grace, and careful editing.

I subscribe to both Dwell and New York Spaces. I think that New York Spaces is more suited to a NYC audience since they detail several NYC residences in each issue as well as have lots of advertising from NYC shops.

For general trends, I buy the special issues from Better Homes and Gardens magazines. Recently, there were issues devoted to lighting, flooring and kitchen and baths.

Also, this is a book with excellent photographs of city apartments around the world - "The Way We Live in the City" (Stafford Cliff/Gilles de Chabaneix) (Rizzoli).

Try apartmenttherapy.com, but beware that it can be addictive.

Thank you all! The websites are useful, but they lack the 'dog ear and review later' appeal. But still, I have been known to bookmark some apartmenttherapy pages.

This is certainly a great start!

Elle Decor and New York Spaces are personal favorites as well as World of Interiors.

I found an interesting magazine in the magazine shop on Park Avenue South between 17th-18th. It's a special issue called "Condos Lofts & Apartments" from House and Home Magazine. It has articles about 3 types of condos (starter home, luxe high-rise and custom condo) with layouts and photos of how the units were decorated as well as other interesting articles.

lobster, that sounds like a great magazine which provides lots of ideas on several different apartments/rooms. I have already forwarded this thread on to her and she has gotten some seriously good ideas. Thank you!
