Our place doesn't have a dishwasher and the quote includes installing a dishwasher. But I've got to thinking... we probably will want to redo the entire kitchen later. Is it worth doing everything all at once, and thus holding off on the dishwasher for now? (We would not also redo the kitchen now, so that's out of the question.) Or is it not really a big deal to add a dishwasher now but do the rest of the stuff later? One reason I ask is that we'll probably have to extend the counter a bit where the dishwasher goes. Obviously if we re-did the kitchen we would replace all of the counters. I'm sure there are a few other little things like that that we would come across if we put in just the dishwasher now... how much do you enjoy workman in your home?
Do you have lots of free time and money?
Do it once, do it right, enjoy.
"we probably will want to redo the entire kitchen later."
Had the same thought, but ended up being *years later*. Once we moved in, we just didn't want to deal with the mess and be without a kitchen for a while. Everyone stayed over at the in-laws for the duration of the project. Glad we finally did it though, but of course we wished we did it before we moved in.
what about this? is there room to put this somewhere in your kitchen?

if you're having the bulk of the construction done now, maybe you can demo the kitchen and use some of the free standing stuff, which is pretty sturdy and solid.

here is some more free standing kitchen stuff.

this is pricier than ikea, but looks good!
you could even gut out a part of your old kitchen, leave some cabinets and either use as is, or take off doors and paint them white. a friend of mine did this and she wallpapered the inside of the cabinets, with the shelves and frame white, it looked very nice.
Just don't make the mistake my first contractor (and I) made...and not take advantage of EVERY INCH of space available. Even if you have 3 inches of space left under the counter...make it into a cupboard for cutting boards...ugh! Interview your contractor, and his/her past clients. Try to see his or her work in person, not just photos. Also, ask for the "contractor's discount" at suppliers..ie..tile, etc. It saved me an additional 15-20% on tiles, etc. Our second contractor was philipshomeimprovement@gmail.com. I highly recommmend him. He was on time, on budget and he and his staff were at our front door at 9 am every morning.
Oh..we "waited" and it ended up we waited 4 years. Ugh..we could have been enjoying our nice kitchen all those years!
Best.
