Discussion about
We are having all of our hardwood doors factory finished (primed and painted). The apartment is pretty modern (vs colonial) and we will be using Benjamin Moore Aura paint throughout. I don't want the doors and trim to be shiny - have you had experience with the satin paint specifically for doors or should I go with eggshell? The walls will all be matte. Thank you!!

Use "flat enamel"

Thanks. Just to clarify, I don't mind some lackluster sheen, but don't like the reflective look of semi-gloss.

Go with satin.

Flat is awful and impossible to clean.

You cannot go less luster than Satin. It won't look right and it will age horribly. Doors get lots of fingerprints--even in clean, adult homes where people are careful. Eggshell is not appropriate for doors.

That's ridiculous. Modernist homes are usually all flat paint. Yes, flat paint is washable. And in addition, it's easy to touch up modern trim, without all the Liberace carvings to deal with.

Um, yes, I do ... and I have in about 15 apartments so far, without incident.

Do you ever touch the doors? Have you had any children?

As Benjamin Moore says about their Aura® Matte Waterborne Interior Paint, "Stains wash off easily". Look it up.

I am aware of Aura paint. I use Aura all the time. I have never used flat or matte on doors. If you say you have in 15 apartments I believe you and might try it sometime.

I've never used Aura. I just gave it as an example because the OP specified it. All major modern paint companies give the same story, when they could just as easily try to get you to buy various sheens from them.

Here's Behr's Premium Plus Interior Flat (a Home Depot staple item):
"An elegant traditional matte sheen is ideal for family rooms, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways and ceilings that require a scrubbable, mildew resistant finish. Backed by a lifetime guarantee*, this durable 100% acrylic latex low VOC product helps hide surface imperfections and offers improved hiding for greater coverage."

So you are telling me that in 15 different apartments you have just used flat paint for the doors trims and moldings?

what the hell is a "matte sheen"? Doesn't the word "sheen" indicate some sort of luster?
As in "not flat"

Alan - so you lick your walls very gently to clean them?

Are you trying to get me to say "because I can"?

Right.

You live like a gypsy ... apparently moving out of an apartment before it's time to clean it.

Lots of people move out of their apartments after fewer than ten years.

So you're what, 140 years old?

Gypsies usually are cagey about that sort of thing.
