Discussion about
I want to replace my doorknobs, which look pretty tired, but I am utterly uninspired by what I have seen so far. Any suggestions for great brands to consider, and showrooms where they can be seen?

If you go the Gracious Home route, get the "contractor" discount. Ask your designer/architect/contractor to sign up for an account with Gracious Home, you pick & pay for stuff but reference their account.

Blech, I was just at Simons. Half of the stuff looks hardly better than what they carry at home depot. The other half looks garish and tacky. Any other thoughts?

Interesting, maybe the knobsare like home depots but not the other hardware. Not even close. Restoration Hardware is good. I know I get 20% off there you can ask your designer or contractor to help you with that

It is hard to say without knowing what you are looking for. I feel that because I see, touch, and use the knobs a hundred times a day, they should be things that fill me with earthly delight. Go all out and splurge. Simon's has wonderful high end choices along with many others. I'm partial to Samuel Heath polished nickel models. Spectacular. And don't scrimp on hinges! Get the polished nickel ones that match the weight and look of the knobs.

We used Deco in Brooklyn for our whole place in Manhattan. Great stock, easy to order custom pieces, very competitive prices.

When we were doing our renovations last year, i just followed Kylewest's advice on this issue. And every day that i open a door or a closet or a cabinet...I thank him.

Rosina, you fill me with pride and smiles. But I know EXACTLY what you mean. Two years after the grand renovation of this humble jr-four, I love those doorknobs everytime I touch one. And of all the things we did in this reno, you know what gets the most comments? The hinges. It kills me. Not the jewel box bathroom I created, not the updated take on a classic kitchen, not the brilliantly reconfigured space or thoughtful lighting. Nope. The hinges. People "ooo" and "ah" about their nickel plated splendor.

KW: I notice hinges too. Mine are, unfortunately, not matchy-matchy because they're prehung.

ali, you are exactly right. I'll see what I can do about that. For now, I am about to turn a magnificent doorknob one more time in the apartment and then I'm off to save the world. Well, maybe not the entire world. We'll see how productive I am today. P.S. Rocky mountain has some nice models! If you really want to get sick, check out Baxter: http://www.sabaxter.com/catalog/door-hardware-custom-door-hardware/custom-door-hardware-door-knobs I think they are even more than Sam Heath.

Have an artisan create custom "crown of thorns" knobs with nails that spike out in all directions. Those will forever attract the comments of your friends.

Samuel Heath is fab. Rejuvenation has some very classic and affordable options, too.

And to think I get enormous pleasure every day from the self-opening/closing trash bins in the cabinetS under the kitchen sinkS. And (gasp) they're PLASTIC!!!

Ok, StreetEasy, please don't remove this comment. I had made an earlier comment about Kylewest turning his magnificient doorknob that apparently got deleted (prudes!) -- unless I had some technical glitch --but I can't let it go now that ph41 claims to get "enormous pleasure" from plastic. To quote the bard, "that's what she said!"
