Just had a spectacular move from Oz including full packing. They were efficient, professional, very careful in packing (nothing broke), used a ton of packing materials (which I was expecting them to cheap out on given flat rate), were super handy (had to take a door off the hinges, take apart and reassemble a bed frame, etc. and did it with no trouble), honest (no hidden charges) and clean (took out all their boxes when done). I can't give them high enough praise - especially given how terrible some of my past move experiences have been! Would definitely use again.

Recent experience: Got three quotes, Flat Rate, Oz, and a small shop guy recommended by my broker. Move was a 5th fl walk up studio to an elevator building, average amount of stuff for a big studio, on a non-peak day. Flat rate quoted 850, oz 115 an hour with 4 hour estimate, and local guy 800 flat rate. Local guy then emailed unprompted two days later offering 600 flat rate. I went with Oz because I was hoping I could get it below 4 hours by being well prepared, and there was plenty of "room" for them to add extra charges. Oz ended up ringing up at 4:15 and $600 total. I thought there was quite a bit of time wasted within those 4:15 but gave them 25% tip anyway because of the walk up and everything arriving in great condition.

By the way, Oz flat rate was exactly as advertised which was great. And I would also suggest getting a quote from a cheapo mover to help negotiate down whoever you use.

Just had a visit from the man from Oz.

I called them because of Keith B's reco (on another thread discussion).

They sent a great guy, an Englishman named David.
He's a music fan and enjoyed the tour of my apt.

He was so pleasant and friendly.

Oz it is.

I have used Moishe's twice in the last four years for difficult moves -- into and out of a penthouse one flight up from the top elevator floor -- including a piano and large couches and bookshelves which had to go down a fire staircase.

Their movers are absolutely about the toughest guys you could ever hope to meet and I can't recommend them enough. It took six guys about eight hours to get most of the stuff out. Then the bookcases, which are 7+ feet tall, wouldn't fit in the elevator (not sure why, as they fit on the way in). So they came back two days later and HAND-CARRIED them down >15 flights of stairs (along with some plants from our deck they hadn't gotten the first time).

For this they charged $1300, no extra fee to come back. No joke. I don't know how they stay in business... but they're the best.

Matt: agree with that.
Maybe he's serious.
Maybe he's just playing with us.

Probably just playing.

DO NOT USE SCHLEEPERS. Broke my stuff, took my remotes and "lost" them for a week, didn't finish the job, etc.

Is it worth getting moving insurance? I've noticed this is a more common add-on now?

Do not use Booth Movers. They are not trustworthy or reliable.

I know this is too late unfortunately for ticky, however to possibly help others with what could be a stressful day, I want to still post.

Divine Moving, absolutely the best.

I have worked with them 4 times in Manhattan and they blow me away with there service, willingness to go beyond what you would expect and price every single time.

One example that stayed in my mind, they had given me a set price (the best price out of the 3 companies I had rung). They arrived exactly on time, were beyond calm and told me not to worry when we were told that the 2 elevators were out in my building that day. They did my move, while smiling even thou now it was a 5 floor walk up job, with everything arriving safe and in the same condition and NO UPCHARGE.

Unbelievable service, they really want to please, and they did.

I highly recommend Manor Moving company - very professional, job was done under estimated time, so the movers get extra tip.

has anyone used the box services they had an article about recently in the NYT?
http://juggleboxmoving.com/
http://www.bin-it.com/????

that sounded really great and it forces you to move out your stuff from the boxes, so no boxes standing around a year later....

wonder if anyone has comments on them , good or bad?

wow! bin rental -- BRILLIANT idea!!!! If you add the cost of boxes (even if you buy 50 at a time from ULINE) - this is a superb deal, and not having to tape every box (or pay movers to do that for you) and the uniformity of box size (makes for a faster move) and FORCING you to unpack -- simply brilliant. Thanks for the links. The yelp reviews for jugglebox are all 5-stars. Sounds like a perfect business.

@NorthNJown, thanks for the comments, will look into that one above the other. I was concerned about bugs and critters possibly being carried around, but it sounds like they sanitize everything....

>>Divine Moving, absolutely the best.<<

Not sure I agree. Our experience with Divine was less than, well, divine. They charge by the hour and our crew seemed to dawdle a bit. Then there were the few sneaky attempts to pack our stuff in well-worn, used boxes (I'd been adamant on using only new boxes for fear of bedbug infestation)--I had to watch like a hawk to make sure they were using only the new stuff. This practice especially sucks as they charge per box and clearly pocket the money whenever they can reuse material.

Packing was quite haphazard and not as careful as I've experienced with other movers. Things were often just dumped into boxes with a few perfunctory pieces of tissue paper but not properly wrapped.

They also managed to lose a key component to our bed frame which went unnoticed for a few weeks and absolutely killed our mattress, which now has to be replaced.

On the upside, we did not get bedbugs and nothing major got broken.

I used flat race twice in the past year (I know, I had a crazy 2011) and both times my experience was excellent. They aren't cheap, but they are prompt, professional and quick. The first move I didn't have a ton of valuable items, but by the time I moved the second time I had all new furniture and all of our breakable wedding presents. Nothing was damaged and both moves were completed in under 3 hours.

Bin-It is amazing!!! Used them about a month ago. They narrow your delivery to within an hour time slot and even have a text notification when they are on the way so you dont sit around waiting all day for delivery. The guys were super nice and right on time and the bins were spotless. Love their branding too! I recommend them to everyone
