Discussion about
Does anyone own or know anything about the Philip Howard Apartments? I have been looking at a few units in the building and would love to hear peoples opinions on it and the location Thanks!

It's close to Target and Home Goods for good shopping. (that Target location has groceries and a pharmacy dept.)
You can take the bus outside Target to the Reis Park Beach (in-season).
The Flatbush Ave. bus will take you to The Botanic Gardens, Brooklyn Museum and onward to the Barclays Arena.

Stay away from the subway on Flatbush Ave./Junction stop, as that train-line stops at various neighborhoods that are iffy.
Instead, there is an express bus to and from Manhattan (I think it's the "BM-4")
Past the Junction/Flatbush Ave. stop, the Nostrand Ave. "B-44" buses lead into the 'hood. However, if you want to ride that bus, it will take you all the way to the Williamsburg Bridge Plaza.

It's also right by Brooklyn College, which, when I attended, always admired the Phillip Howard while aboard the aforementioned B44 by Truth. That same bus will take you to Sheepshead Bay, going southbound.

From ads I've clicked on from time to time out of curiousity, the apartments are spacious, with great views from the upper floors, especially those with terraces. Having a pool isn't bad either, if you want to skip the interminable hellish bus ride to Riis Park Beach. Trust me- I've done it - on sweltering days when there was zero room inside AND no air conditioning. Ugh!

Best of Luck, whatever you decide.

Truth: Remember the "Sugar Bowl" on Campus Road?!? And Barchas used books?!? Ancient history, I know!

P.S., K.L:

I think one really gets their money's worth there.

Can you imagine what those units would go for if the building were on the UES?!? Fuggedaboutit!

walpurgis: I don't go back to the time of the Sugar Bowl or Barchas Books.
I do remember a great bakery, just past Flatbush Ave., on Nostrand Ave. : "Lords"? Was that the name of it, walpurgis?

I do know that the buses now going to the beach are new buses, with A/C. It's not a bad way to get to the beach and it only requires that one bus, no transfers.

walpurgis: I have a fond memory of that bakery:
Jerry Garcia was playing a solo show at Brooklyn College, around 1970. The college kids on the concert-staff brought in some delicious treats from "Lords".
Was it called "Lords", walpurgis?

Sorry, Truth - I'm out with the dogs, & didn't see your post until now - hope all is well. I'm being yanked by them around toen as I (attempt) to type this.

Yep - Lord's it was - with that mega-sized, two story sign above it! I never realized until now it could've been considered "The Lords of Flatbush"! Hah! No? Oh well...

Barchas & The Sugar Bowl were from the mid seventies, when I attended BC. ("BC"...now THERE'S a laugh - it may as well been BC, considering how long ago of it was. Glad to hear the Riis-bound buses are finally air conditioned!

There were some great concerts a Brooklyn College in the 1970s.
I remember that Bill Graham took us to eat at Lundy's, before the Jerry Garcia concert.
Lundy's was famous for its unfriendly West Indian wait-staff and long wait for tables:
Walk in and hover around a table that was eating desert and having coffee, then wait for a busboy to clear the table
and for the table to be set.

Jerry had never been to Lundy's before and he watched with amusement as Bill went to a busboy-stand, took a plastic bin and then cleared a table for us. Bill had experience from his very early days, working at a resort "up in the Mountains"

"Lords", those were some tasty snacks!

Never knew that about Lundy's (which is now Cherry Hill Gourmet & a food court to a slew of other places).

walpurgis:
Yes, that's the way it was at the original Lundy's. No reservations, just walk in and wait for a table.

We recently took the boat from L.I. to pick up some Brooklyn friends at the Knapp Street marina. We ate at Jordan's Lobster Dock. Then we took a nice walk down Emmons Ave.: very good recovery from hurricane Sandy. A good selection of restaurants and a "LOEHMANN'S" on Emmons and E. 21st street. Randazzo's is still there and the original Lundy's building, with that Cherry Hill Gourmet market.

Those huge houses across the bay are beautiful, although Manhattan Beach took a bad hit in the hurricane.
There are swans floating in the bay. Very nice.
Kimberly can take that B-44 bus straight down to Emmons Ave. and have a nice afternoon. It's probably less than a half-hour ride from the Junction.
