Discussion about
What is the best way to tip the staff in your building? We have a list of 9 names but some of them I never see. I thought of a card addressed to all nine with a bunch of cash and basically leave it up to them to distribute amongst themselves. Or maybe give the card to the super and ask him to distribute to his staff as he says fit. Or just buy a bunch of target gift cards and give them out as we see them? My worry is we would miss a couple. Finally, we have only lived in the building for 5 months. Do you think is appropriate to “prorate” the gift amount based on that or it’s frowned upon? Sorry for all the questions, although we have lived in condos all our life, almost all of them have been smaller, self-managed with no or minimal staff. T
Make nine envelopes with whatever tip you want in them. Make sure your name and apartment number are on the cards. Carry down to doorman. Ask his name if you don't know it. ("I apologize but we just moved into the building five months ago and have been unpacking.") Thank him, shake his hand, say, "we also have an envelope for X -- when's his shift?" And then at X's shift, shake his hand, hand over envelope.
Personally, I would tip as if I'd lived there for 1+ years. In the long run this well serve you well.

I agree. You are tipping for 2024 service.
Exactly what f_p and Keith said.
tip just the 5 months - and in gift cards - and in a month or so explain to your wife why every morning the doorman scowls at her, why the area outside of your door is always dirty but your neighbor down the hall is clean, and why the super didn't fix the leaky faucet for a couple weeks.
