Discussion about
While I was pleased to hear that Bernie is not going to fight his 11 charges -- it has been rumored that Ruth (wife) will try to keep her home and $50+++ million in other assets. What?!! My gut reaction is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! If for some unjust reason she does not speand the rest of her life rotting in jail as well -- I feel the only fit punishment for her and her manged clan is to have to be rendered absolutrely penniless. So that they may suffer as many of the victims are.... I mean penniless -- not a dime set aside for retirement. let them start anew at 67. Ugh!!
forgive typos, please. Thanks.
oh...i'm so embarassed for you.
Agreed. If the prosectors don't get her, and every clerk in that department, and the sons, and the brother, justice will not be done.
I read somewhere a woman-on-the-street commentary that the most appropriate way for Madoff to suffer would be scrubbing toilets in a homeless shelter for the remainder of his existence. Seems about right to me. If Mrs. Madoff gets to keep the apartment and the millions, I will consider the judge incompetent.
CNBC had a segment on Bernie Madoff this evening. Apparently his Ponzi victims include individuals who don't necessarily rely on the law to settle crimes committed against them. I can't believe Madoff was stupid enough to mess with a certain segment of Eastern Europeans and Russians. In fact, a woman who ran a Madoff feeder fund that had Eastern Europeans "investors" is in hiding. Madoff has placed his entire family in jeopardy.
Returning to the strictly legal aspect of this case, I doubt that Ruth Madoff will be keeping her $7MM+ apartment and $50MM+ of securities. She has worked as a bookkeeper for Madoff in the past, has an office at his firm and listed herself as a Director of Bernard Madoff Investments on a political contribution form. The fact that Ruth Madoff recently hired her own lawyer to me is an indication that things aren't going as easily as she expected.
I share your outrage and I expect law enforcement will be setting a prime example with this case. The smirk has disappeared from Bernie Madoff's face.
I just saw the the judge will not be giving the snetence to bernie for another couple of months. Can somebody please share with me why a confessed felon gets to spend 6+++ months in his penthouse after the fact?
Why does the judge give him so much slack????
who has the floor plan for the Madoff Apt.?
is this it?

Madoff should be charged on common felony theft charges in the New York State system and be kept in Riker's for now. Is there anyone out there who knows who we can call, as citizens, to urge some action on this matter?
He deserves to go to jail. There is a legal mechanism to put him in jail. We just need a DA to stand up and do it. Anyone know how we can start calling people to make this happen?
uwsmom,
Thats the place, wow!
Amazing, built completly from fertilizer, amazing...

each time i hear that there's news on the madoff case i keep on wondering "did he finally kill himself?". gruesome, isn't it? he reminds me that back in the day (when there was shame and honor) captains used to sink with the boat. not his cup of tea.

Several comments:
(1) He hasn't pled guilty yet (as of 3/11). Whatever he is alleged to have said to his son, cops, whatever, is very different from a formal plea. Hell, he just waived indictment--this is, in the grand scheme of things, very early in the process. If he hadn't waived indictment (which is, by the way, a Constitutional right), this whole thing would have extended another few months.
(2) The issue is whether he should get bail pending trial/plea negotiation stage. That's up to the judge. However, pointing in FAVOR of bail are the following: (1) he was not charged with any violent crimes and (2) he's probably not considered a flight risk (he's probably handed over his passport).
(3) If he strikes a deal with prosecutors, sentencing will come MUCH more quickly than if he goes to trial. Even so, it won't be overnight. Things take time. If he insisted on going to trial (as would be his Constitutional right), he could be out of jail for years. Easily.
(4) The judge in his case (Judge Chin) is very good, very smart. Whatever criticism you may have, it shouldn't be directed at him.
AIG London may have "lost" $500B. Take that Bernie.
slope,
good summary. only one thing to add: he's even less of a flight risk because he is not allowed to leave his apartment and is monitored 24 hours a day. whatever he may or may not have done, or may or may not have admitted too, he has not been convicted of any crime. there is a criminal justice system for a reason and there is a procedure that has to play out.
Slope and Happy -- Thanks. i appreciate the legalities and process -- butit seems SO UNFAIR that his victims have had to beg and borrow to pay for food and shelter thanks to Bernie and his non flight risk status still likely allows him to sleep on soft fine linen each night. it is may be correct -- but certainly not FAIR.
I really do hope that Ruth gets her comeuppance too. which is the start of this thread. I have heard very favorable things about the Judge -- but people are miffed nonetheless...
Is it Judge Chin or Judge McKenna?
Definitely Bernard Madoff should be playing 'drop the soap' in Riker's. It seems to me that Ruth Madoff can't claim that those ill-gotten millions are hers since she & Bernie have been together for decades & all that money came from Bernie's companies. There was an excellent profile of Madoff in last week's (I think) New York Magazine. I'm just hoping that all of the perpetrators will be brought to justice!

HappyRenter, Cut out your righteous liberal bullshit, he needs a lesson in street justice and RIKERs is the place he shits in his pants every night!
You commit murder and get 15-20 years and people complain that the accused rights may have been violated during the arrest. Now, a guy steals some dough from 4,000 people and they scream bloody murder because he IS getting due process. Seems odd to me.
If the extended Madoff family plans to hold on to its millions they will be in trouble
a) by legal actions by previous investors
b) more dangerous is that Madoff accepted Russian Mafia money via feeder bank in Austria. That lady over there went into hiding but that will not help. I expect quick moves by the extended Madoff family after they have gotten the first call from their Russian friends LOL
Government pursuing her assets and apartment -- I hope they seize it all...
