First, to give credit where credit is due, I noticed the weird hfscomm1 / jimhones09 dynamic when it came out, but it was w67th who first put 2+2 together what it meant.

On the IP address vs. username thing, I think SE got annoyed at some point with troll taking up new usernames to counter auto-ignore measures, so they switched from username to IP. Troll countered with changing IPs, SE got annoyed and used their levers to come to a peace agreement. While troll can annoy with anonymous IPs, SE can twist bigger levers.

I think the IP filter is pretty narrow. Only a few mostly old random users were being picked up as well, unlikely to have been troll from forensic evidence. Possibly neighbors who picked up free wireless, recycled IP, co-workers behind the same corporate IP, etc.

Well I'm very impressed with Ino's detective work but I'll admit I'm a little surprised. Always thought Rufus was an obnoxious annoying pest but I always considered him harmless. Now it turns "harmless" Rufus is in fact a highly disturbed individual who descends to the level of vicious personal attacks Interesting that having be reviled as "Rufus" on this board, he would choose to focus his venom on a particularly valued contributor.

If we're talking about the rufus of long ago (and his various other handles), he is NOT the same as any of this other, more recent vermin. I'm sure SE through him into the ban mix just because he had such a long-standing legacy of ban requests, and he was an obvious name to ban despite not being current. Note that none of his other handles were banned: off the top of my head, MarkAnthony, Quantum, etc. (I'm too tired to remember.)

as to why he chose me, i think it's simple. i thought the sotomayor thread set it off, but it most likely was the PCV going back to RS thread. one of Rufus's recurrent themes was his disdain for gov't subsidized housing in any form. he hated people getting "hand-outs." and often called for the buildings to be torn down.

I think PCV and StuyTown serve a good population. Unfortunately you have some bad residents there, like the Ready family. You break things like the toilet seat and then won't even replace them. YOU are the problem. ST/PCV aren't bad. New York certainly isn't bad. The people who sit in NYC at home all day, doing nothing, not working, not contributing to society, not volunteering, not doing anything productive - just blogging angrily, those people are the downside of NYC, but they can also be in Chicago, LA, or where else am I?

About a month ago when SE implemented the new troll-control measures, there was a little smoke-and-mirrors thread with an entertaining conversation between hfscomm1 and various hfs- and jimhones-based aliases that mysteriously got pulled out of nowhere. That's because SE got annoyed with the troll's constant starting of new login names and just started banning his IP address outright, but said troll didn't know this and started posting as jimhones09 which was also being auto-ignored to his surprise. He then embarked on some damage control.

You can also see the hfscomm1 manifesto was actually shortly run by jimhones09 in his early days about 5 months before he decided to hand it over to the new persona hfscomm1. For example:

The reason this is a dead giveaway is because rufus is a handle that has been unused for about a year. How would the troll know that rufus is being auto-ignored? That's because rufus is the troll. In his panicked state, the poor troll looked up all his accounts to see them all being auto-ignored, and he forgot to realize that hfscomm1 should not know that rufus is being auto-ignored as well: rufus had stopped posting about a year prior.
